LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Carolyn D. Baskin on being named a
Madison Jewish Center Woman of the Year on May 23, 2010

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals of integrity and character who distin-
guish themselves in service to their faith and community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Carolyn D. Baskin on being named a Madison Jewish Center Woman of
the Year; she will be honored at the Center's 79th Journal Celebration,
to be held at Temple Sholom on Sunday, May 23, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Baskin is the youngest child of Gay and the late
Phillip Baskin; she was brought up in a Conservative Jewish home and a
very philanthropic environment; the example set by her parents instilled
in her a great value of her Jewish identity, love of Conservative
Judaism, and dedication to working in the Jewish community; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Brooklyn College with a bachelor's
degree in Judaic Studies, she worked for The American Friends of Bar
Ilan University and B'nai Zion in their fundraising divisions and is
currently a student in New York Career Institute's court reporting
program; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Baskin was one of the first girls to become a Bat
Mitzvah at East Midwood Jewish Center and, since it was difficult at the
time for Jews in Russia to have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, as she read the
Haftorah during Friday evening services, she held a "twinning ceremony,"
sharing her Bat Mitzvah with Rada Goldberg of Leningrad, both of whom
celebrated the 25th Anniversary of their Bat Mitzvahs this past year;
and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Baskin is a Life Member of Hadassah and belongs to
its Park Slope Chapter; she is also a valued member of Madison Jewish
Center where she has chaired and participated in numerous Sisterhood,
Social Club and congregational activities; and
WHEREAS, Carolyn Baskin is an active member of the Journal Committee;
she has been a member of the all women's choir for the Sisterhood Shab-
bat Services, has served as a gabbai during many Shabbat services, has
read from the Torah for the Social Club's Shabbat, for special family
occasions, and whenever needed and is among a small group of women
invited to read the Yom Kippur morning Torah portion; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such accomplishment and commitment to faith are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Carolyn D. Baskin on being named a Madison Jewish Center
Woman of the Year on May 23, 2010; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Carolyn D. Baskin.
