LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Serendipity II for Women of New York
Therapeutic Communities, Inc. upon the occasion of its 9th Anniversary
and Women's History Month Celebration on March 26, 2010
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of organizations
and individuals who devote themselves to the welfare of the community
and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Serendipity II for Women of New York Therapeutic Communities, Inc. upon
the occasion of its 9th Anniversary and Women's History Month Cele-
bration, to be held on Friday afternoon, March 26, 2010, at Serendipity
II's Madeline Randers Residence, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, New York Therapeutic Communities, Inc. (NYTC) is a not-for-
profit organization with more than 30 years of experience providing
substance abuse treatment to adults in the criminal justice system; it
operates community-based residential programs utilizing a therapeutic
community (TC) model; and
WHEREAS, NYTC's mission is to help program participants effect changes
in attitude and behavior which will enable them to make choices associ-
ated with a healthy, positive lifestyle free of crime and drugs; since
its inception in 1977, NYTC has successfully treated thousands of men
and women, helping them to lead productive lives, free of involvement
with drugs and crime; and
WHEREAS, NYTC's Serendipity Programs enable people involved in the
criminal justice system to prepare themselves to reenter society and
offer a cost-effective alternative-to-incarceration (ATI) for those for
whom rehabilitation is a priority; and
WHEREAS, Its Serendipity II for Women program is a residential program
primarily for individuals in the criminal justice system who have a
substance abuse problem; it offers treatment to former prisoners reen-
tering society and also provides an effective alternative-to-incarcera-
tion to help individuals become productive citizens who no longer burden
the criminal justice system; and
WHEREAS, Serendipity II uses the Therapeutic Community (TC) model,
which has been achieving success for over 40 years; women in the program
live together while they work through personal and practical issues
which block them from living fulfilling, drug-free lives; within a
disciplined, hierarchical structure based on peer self-help, partic-
ipants gradually regain their self-confidence while furthering their
education or job training, reuniting with their families, and otherwise
taking steps to return to society; and
WHEREAS, Clinical staff serve as counselors, rational authorities, and
role models for their clients; though individuals must accept responsi-
bility for their own recovery, the Serendipity II program offers a prov-
en program, ensuring that each participant has every opportunity to be
successful; depending on their individual progress, participants can
expect to spend up to twelve months in the program; and
WHEREAS, Serendipity II has contributed significantly to improving the
lives of those it serves, and their families, and may be justly proud of
its programs and accomplishments, as well as of the model it represents
for other programs and agencies throughout New York City, New York
State, and the nation; and
WHEREAS, As Serendipity II celebrates its 9th Anniversary of service,
this Legislative Body is pleased to have the opportunity to applaud all
those associated with Serendipity II and New York Therapeutic Communi-
ties over the years for their dedication to addressing problems of
significant societal concern; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Serendipity II for Women of New York Therapeutic Communities, Inc.
upon the occasion of its 9th Anniversary and Women's History Month Cele-
bration on March 26, 2010; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Serendipity II and to New York Therapeutic Communities, Inc.
