LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION celebrating the life and legacy of Brother George
Larkin, O.S.F. to be recognized by St. Francis College at its 49th Annu-
al Charter Award Dinner

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize those
individuals of preeminent character whose unwavering faith and extraor-
dinary lives exemplified the highest ideals of humanity and whose life-
work and civic endeavor served to enhance the quality of life in their
communities and this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to join St.
Francis College in celebrating the life and legacy of Brother George
Larkin, O.S.F. '60, who will be recognized at the College's 49th Annual
Charter Award Dinner on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at the New York Marri-
ot Marquis, New York City, New York; and
WHEREAS, James Larkin, son of James and Kathleen Maffar Larkin, was
born in New York City on March 2, 1934; Brother George, who knew from a
young age that he wanted to be a Franciscan brother, arrived at St.
Francis College in 1971, after teaching at St. Francis Xavier Parish
School, Bishop Ford High School, and St. Bartholmew's School, where he
served as principal; and
WHEREAS, He received the Franciscan Habit and religious name "George"
on August 15, 1951, and made his profession of vows two years later on
August 25, 1953; his early training at St. Anthony's Juniorate and St.
Bonaventure's Postulate in Smithtown, Long Island, prepared him for the
life of teaching, coaching and mentoring which was his calling; and
WHEREAS, Brother George recruited and welcomed students to St. Francis
College for nearly four decades; known for his patience, optimism and
superb listening skills, he personified the Franciscan spirit; he
extended love, compassion and genuine concern to all; and
WHEREAS, The very spirit of Brother George is reflected in the stained
glass chapel windows of the College, etched in the School's stone and in
the hearts and minds of all he has met; and
WHEREAS, Brother George Larkin passed away on August 17, 2009; in
honor of his memory a scholarship has been created in his name; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished man of God always gave enlightenment,
guidance and wisdom to the many entrusted to his care and administered
abundantly and unstintingly to the spiritual and corporal needs of all;
and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Brother George Larkin's life was a portrait of service, a
legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will remain as a
comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the life and legacy of Brother George Larkin, O.S.F. to be
recognized by St. Francis College at its 49th Annual Charter Award
Dinner; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Brother George Larkin, O.S.F.
