LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Sheridan Fire Department upon the
occasion of celebrating its 100th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor volunteer fire companies and their members who have exhibited
great dedication, courage and selflessness in protecting their neighbors
from the ravages of fire and other disasters in this great Empire State;
and
WHEREAS, Since the early days of the "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our great State's efforts to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
WHEREAS, The Sheridan Fire Department was formed to serve the Sheri-
dan, New York community in 1910; the first station was converted from a
blacksmith shop into a working fire fighting facility; and
WHEREAS, In the early days of the Sheridan Fire Department, the fire
fighting apparatus consisted of a vehicle similar to a Model T car
equipped with soda acid equipment, which was used to create pressure to
spray water from the apparatus to the fire itself; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, Governed by Fire Commissioners, the Sheridan Fire Department
currently boasts approximately 50 active members; the Department is
certified for Advanced Life Support; and
WHEREAS, Covering a 75-square-mile area, mostly rural with a growing
industrial park, the Sheridan Fire Department responds to emergencies in
Sheridan, New York, and the neighboring communities in Chautauqua Coun-
ty; and
WHEREAS, Sufficient gratitude cannot be expressed to those devoted
individuals who recognize that the preservation of life and property is
a sacred responsibility and who make that responsibility their own by
serving as firefighters; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those volunteer fire companies that have achieved notable success
in protecting lives and property over the course of their long histories
in this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Sheridan Fire Department upon the occasion of celebrating its
100th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Sheridan Fire Department.
