LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Marlo Schermerhorn upon the occa-
sion of celebrating his 100th Birthday on July 6, 2010

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Marlo
Schermerhorn upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th Birthday on
Tuesday, July 6, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are vital parts of, and valuable
assets to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, A native of northern Indiana, Marlo Schermerhorn was born on
July 6, 1910; and
WHEREAS, Marlo Schermerhorn attended the Conservatory of Music at
Ithaca College, in Ithaca, New York, and graduated in 1931; upon gradu-
ation from Ithaca College he was hired as the Lancaster, New York,
School District's first accredited instrumental music teacher; and
WHEREAS, A founding father of the Lancaster School District band
formed in 1942, Marlo Schermerhorn remained active in the band until his
retirement in 1965; the Lancaster band offered yearly concerts and
participated in local parades and presented half-time shows, and was
well-known throughout Western New York; and
WHEREAS, Marlo Schermerhorn met his wife, Cleta, while both were
students at the Conservatory of Music at Ithaca College; they have been
happily married for 78 years based on a relationship of mutual respect;
and
WHEREAS, Still active at the age of 100, Marlo Schermerhorn seldom
misses a Lancaster band performance; he was honored on his birthday at
the dedication of the new Lancaster bandshell, named in memory of his
former student, longtime Lancaster band instructor Richard E. Pascucci;
and
WHEREAS, Together, Marlo and Cleta Schermerhorn are the proud parents
of a son, Devon "Pete"; they have two beloved granddaughters, Michele
and Toby; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with his zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished man, who has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the
stamina and courage to savor a full life, has inspired the lives of his
many friends and family; and
WHEREAS, This beloved senior citizen has enriched the lives of those
around him through his joyous and sincere love for others and through
the quiescent charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of
years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Marlo Schermerhorn upon the occasion of celebrating his
100th Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, he tran-
smitted to Marlo Schermerhorn.
