LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Barbara Pelikow upon the occasion of her
designation by the Association of Orthodox Jewish Teachers as the recip-
ient of its Special Education Administrator of the Year Award on March
15, 2009

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those illustrious individuals of distinguished purpose whose
lives have been committed to the pursuit of excellence in the education
of the youth of the Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to
commend Barbara Pelikow upon the occasion of her designation by the
Association of Orthodox Jewish Teachers of the New York City Public
Schools as the recipient of its Special Education Administrator of the
Year Award; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Pelikow, Administrator of Special Education, will be
honored at the organization's 39th Annual Luncheon, to be held at The
Renaissance in Brooklyn, New York, on Sunday, March 15, 2009, in recog-
nition of her outstanding leadership, community involvement, and unwav-
ering commitment to the policies of the Association of Orthodox Jewish
Teachers; and
WHEREAS, Currently an administrator in the New York City Department of
Education's (D.O.E.) Brooklyn Integrated Service Center (ISC), Barbara
Pelikow was born and raised in Brooklyn; she began her career with the
New York City Board of Education, now the D.O.E., as a special education
teacher in the program for Language and Hearing Impaired Children
(SLHIC) in 20K204; and
WHEREAS, After a several year hiatus while she was raising her family,
Barbara Pelikow returned to the Board teaching students with special
needs at 27K045 in Queens; she later became an Educational Evaluator
and, subsequently, the Placement Officer for the Committee of Special
Education in District 27; and
WHEREAS, After the Department of Education's first restructuring,
Barbara Pelikow's new position was as the Special Education Evaluation
and Placement Officer (SEEPO) for Region 5, after which she served as an
Instructional Support Specialist (ISS) for Region 5, covering districts
in Queens and Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, Shortly thereafter, she was named the Regional Administrator
of Special Education (RASE), an assignment which evolved into her
current position as an Administrator of Special Education (ASE) for
schools in Districts 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 23, and 32; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Pelikow has also served as a consultant to Nassau
BOCES, evaluating possible learning problems with Hebrew speaking
students; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her many professional and family responsibil-
ities, Barbara Pelikow has been called upon to contribute her time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of herself unstintingly; she is also an active member of her Young Isra-
el synagogue, where she has served on several committees and has chaired
many diverse programs; and
WHEREAS, Her husband Alan has been with Barbara Pelikow throughout;
they are the proud parents of Shira, Michael, and Aimee; the in-laws of
Ari and Alisa; and the loving grandparents of Jakie and Ashi, all of
whom are proud to be part of her life and rejoice in her many achieve-
ments; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such accomplishment are brought to our attention it is appropri-

ate to publicly proclaim and commend them for the edification and
emulation of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Barbara Pelikow upon the occasion of her designation as the recip-
ient of the Association of Orthodox Jewish Teachers' Special Education
Administrator of the Year Award on March 15, 2009; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Barbara Pelikow.
