LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Mike Salvia upon the occasion of
receiving the Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation's 2010 Phil "Toppy"
Moresco Award
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend the efforts of individuals who distinguish themselves in service
to the cause of working men and women in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Mike Salvia upon the occasion of his designation as the recipient of the
Hudson Valley Area Labor Federation's Phil "Toppy" Moresco Award; and
WHEREAS, He will be honored at the Hudson Valley Area Labor Feder-
ation's Fourth Annual Labor Heroes Celebration, to be held at The
Meadowbrook in New Windsor, New York on Friday, February 26, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Mike Salvia, of CWA Local 1120, a man of singular
distinction, is receiving this most prestigious award from the Hudson
Valley Area Labor Federation in recognition of his unwavering commitment
and significant contributions to the community as a labor activist and
area leader; and
WHEREAS, Mike Salvia, the current President of Communications Workers
of America (CWA) Local 1120 and Secretary Treasurer of the Hudson Valley
Area Labor Federation, has long been a leader in his union and local;
since 2000, he has served in a number of capacities, including as Shop
Steward, Business Agent, and Executive Vice President, working on behalf
of his members; and
WHEREAS, Previous to serving at Local 1120, Mike Salvia was a member
of CWA Local 1107 in Rockland County and served as a New York City
Police Officer for 12 years prior to joining CWA; and
WHEREAS, Mike Salvia is a lifetime student, learning not only from his
experiences, but from formal education as well; he has earned one
master's and two bachelor's degrees from Mount Saint Mary College and
continues to attend programs and take additional courses which will
further enhance his ability to serve his membership and his community;
and
WHEREAS, Mike Salvia has long had a strong desire to make his communi-
ty a better place; an accomplished pilot, he donates his personal plane
and his time to Angel Flight, a not-for-profit organization that
provides air travel to children with medical needs; he also flies for
Animal Rescue Flights, which assists animals in need by transporting
them from overpopulated shelters to loving families; and
WHEREAS, He has, in addition, donated his time, talent, and resources
to the SIDS Foundation, Boy and Girl Scouts of America, Juvenile
Diabetes, the American Red Cross, the Greater New York Blood Bank, New
York State Special Olympics, and the American Heart Association; and
WHEREAS, Mike Salvia resides in Poughkeepsie; with him throughout have
been his wife, Prin, and their five children, all of whom are proud to
be a part of his life and rejoice in his many accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Mike Salvia has displayed throughout
his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Mike Salvia upon the occasion of receiving the Hudson Valley
Area Labor Federation's Phil "Toppy" Moresco Award on February 26, 2010;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mike Salvia, 157 Van Wagner Road, Poughkeepsie, New York
12603.
