LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Ron Ceravolo upon the occasion of his
retirement after 23 distinguished years as the coach of the Newark
Varsity Boys Basketball Team

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, to commend notable athletic coaches who
serve the youth of this great Empire State, and who have distinguished
themselves and their schools through outstanding commitment and exem-
plary athletic achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Ron
Ceravolo upon the occasion of his retirement after 23 distinguished
years as the coach of the Newark Varsity Boys Basketball Team; and
WHEREAS, After three decades of courtside views and obtaining his
400th victory as the Newark Varsity Boys Basketball head coach, Ron
Ceravolo states that the 2008-2009 season will be his last; and
WHEREAS, In 23 years as varsity coach, Ron Ceravolo has accumulated 14
Finger Lakes East titles, four sectional titles, two trips to the state
tournament, one state championship-game appearance, and eight straight
16-win seasons; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Newark, Ron Ceravolo tried one semester of
college before ending up working in the construction business; then one
day, the Reverend Joe McDonald asked him to coach the eighth-grade boys
team at the St. Michael School, and that is where his coaching career
began; and
WHEREAS, At that time, Ron Ceravolo also coached baseball and foot-
ball; one of his players named Frank, eventually introduced Coach Cera-
volo to his mother, Helen; Helen and Ron would later marry in 1973; and
WHEREAS, Ron Ceravolo mentions that it was his wife, Helen, who helped
him form a new life; Coach Ceravolo went back to college, first to
Finger Lakes Community College, then to SUNY Brockport; and
WHEREAS, Ron Ceravolo earned both his Bachelor's degree and his
Master's degree from SUNY Brockport; in 1982, he took a job teaching in
Newark, and along the way he became an assistant basketball coach to
Putt More at Finger Lakes Community College and also spent a year as the
junior varsity coach in Newark; and
WHEREAS, Ron Ceravolo, known for his intense coaching style, believes
in working hard every day, being on time, and strongly believing that
the team concept takes precedence over any individual successes; he
mentions that he has been blessed to coach in his hometown, and that the
greatest pleasure is seeing former players become successful in their
lives, and also coaching and teaching former players' sons; and
WHEREAS, Ron Ceravolo also mentions that the success of Newark's
program comes from the outstanding coaches, beginning with Gary Miller
and Gary Seager, who built the foundation of the program in Newark; in
addition, he refers to the continuity of a great coaching staff at
Newark, including Tim Tanea, who has been the eighth-grade coach for 20
years and Bob Havrilla, his assistant coach for the past 18 years; and
WHEREAS, Even with his retirement from basketball, Ron Ceravolo will
still be seen coaching modified soccer and baseball; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Helen, their chil-
dren, Tammy, Frank, and Tim, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of
his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Ron Ceravolo's positive demeanor, selfless commitment, and
caring concern have contributed to his enduring success as a coach and
mentor, earning him the just respect and admiration of his community,

his peers, and the athletes he has so ably coached; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Ron Ceravolo upon the occasion of his retirement after 23 distin-
guished years as the coach of the Newark Varsity Boys Basketball Team;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Ron Ceravolo.
