LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Arnold B. Gardner for his many years of
dedicated service as a Member-at-Large of the Board of Regents of the
State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to recognize and
publicly acknowledge individuals who distinguish themselves in their
profession, in service to their community, and in their commitment to
excellence in the education of the youth of the Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Arnold B. Gardner upon the occasion of his retirement after many years
of dedicated service as a Member-at-Large of the Board of Regents of the
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Regent Gardner was born in New York City, where he attended
public elementary and high school; he proudly served his country for two
years in the United States Army; and he is a graduate of the University
of Buffalo and Harvard Law School, where he earned his LL.B. degree; and
WHEREAS, Regent Gardner served as a member and then President of the
Buffalo Board of Education; he also served as Chairman of the New York
State Education Department Task Force on Teacher Education and Certif-
ication which originated the Teaching as a Profession project in New
York State; and
WHEREAS, For 19 years, Regent Gardner served as a Trustee of the State
University of New York, including five years as Vice Chairman of the
Board; in March 1999, he was elected as a Member-at-Large to the Board
of Regents of the State of New York and was re-elected in April 2004;
and
WHEREAS, In addition to his career in education, Regent Gardner is a
member of the New York State and Erie County Bar Associations and prac-
ticed law with distinction in Buffalo, specializing in matters of busi-
ness and finance; and
WHEREAS, During his career, Regent Gardner has also been actively
engaged in various organizations, having served as a member of the Board
of Governors of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion,
National Vice President of the National Council of the American Jewish
Committee, Trustee of the New York State Archives Partnership Trust, and
as a member of the New York State Holocaust Memorial Commission; and
WHEREAS, Among the numerous honors which have been presented to him
are awards and citations from the New York State NAACP, the National
Conference of Christians and Jews, and the University of Buffalo School
of Law, which honored him as Lawyer of the Year; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Sue S. Gardner, and
their two children and three grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged
to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Regent Gardner has served the people of New York State with
true dedication and commitment; as he completes his distinguished
service as a Member-at-Large of the Board of Regents of the State of New
York, he leaves a legacy of accomplishment and of commitment to a sound
basic education for all New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to recognize the contrib-
utions of Regent Gardner to education in New York, helping to establish
standards other states seek to emulate; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, it is appropriate to publicly proclaim and commend them for the
edification and emulation of others; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Arnold B. Gardner upon the occasion of his retirement after many
years of dedicated service as a Member-at-Large of the Board of Regents
of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Arnold B. Gardner.
