LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring President Christoph M. Kimmich upon the
occasion of his retirement after 36 years of distinguished service to
Brooklyn College
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to recognize and
publicly acknowledge those exemplary leaders in the field of education
whose purposeful lives and distinguished careers have been committed to
excellence in the education of the citizens of this great Empire State;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
President Christoph M. Kimmich upon the occasion of his retirement after
36 years of distinguished service to Brooklyn College; and
WHEREAS, Christoph M. Kimmich will retire this summer from the Presi-
dency of Brooklyn College, which he has held for ten years, and from the
faculty of the College, where he has been present for thirty-six years;
and
WHEREAS, His presidency and diligent leadership, have brought a
renaissance to Brooklyn College; it has created new expectations and
raised standards of excellence on the campus, renewed the faculty by
adding 294 young academics to a total full-time faculty of 539,
strengthened academic offerings by developing imaginative new courses
and programs, brought student services to a new level of richness and
attentiveness, erected a handsome new building for athletics and student
services, and put a performing arts center and a new science building on
the drawing board; and
WHEREAS, Christoph M. Kimmich came to Brooklyn College in 1973 as an
associate professor of history and became chair of the department in
1980; from 1984 to 1988, he served as associate provost of the College
and from 1988 to 1997, as provost; in 1997, he began a two-year term as
interim chancellor of The City University of New York; he returned to
Brooklyn College as president in February 2000; and
WHEREAS, Christoph M. Kimmich graduated from Haverford College with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961, with high honors in history; he is also
a graduate of Oxford University, where he won a D.Phil. in 1964; he was
a Fulbright Scholar, 1961-62 and 1962-63, an International Affairs
Fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations, 1974-75, a John Simon
Guggenheim Fellow, 1983-84, and a Visitor at the Institute for Advanced
Study in Princeton that same year; he has also written extensively on
German foreign policy, 1918-1945; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his lifetime, Christoph M. Kimmich has continually
demonstrated extreme competence, extraordinary intelligence and inspira-
tional leadership in his unwavering service to the Brooklyn and CUNY
communities; and
WHEREAS, The extraordinary career and accomplishments of Christoph M.
Kimmich present a model of educational leadership and achievement which
merits the admiration and appreciation of the people of the State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, With just cause and true purpose, this Legislative Body is
pleased to recognize the significant contributions of Christoph M.
Kimmich to education in the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor President Christoph M. Kimmich upon the occasion of his retirement
after 36 years of distinguished service to Brooklyn College, and to wish
him continued success in all of his future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Christoph M. Kimmich.
