LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Chinese-American Planning Council
upon the occasion of its 44th Anniversary Chinese New Year Dinner on
January 29, 2009

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that organizations
which faithfully devote their resources and purposeful energies to
preserving and improving the quality of life in the communities they
serve should be duly recognized and justly applauded; and
WHEREAS, The Chinese, or Lunar, New Year is the most important and
most popular of Chinese festivals; this year the Chinese-American
people, in accordance with their custom and calendar, will celebrate the
year 4707, the Year of the Ox; and
WHEREAS, The Chinese-American Planning Council will welcome the Year
of the Ox with a joyful salute at its 44th Anniversary Chinese New Year
Dinner, to be held at Jing Fong Restaurant in New York City on Thursday,
January 29, 2009; and
WHEREAS, The Chinese-American Planning Council, established in 1965,
is one of the largest comprehensive human service organizations serving
the growing Asian-American population in the City of New York and one of
the largest nonprofit providers of educational, social, and community
services for Asian-Americans in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Serving over 8,000 people daily, the Chinese-American Plan-
ning Council (CPC) provides vital day care, housing, workforce develop-
ment, training, social and cultural services for Asian-American chil-
dren, youth, adults, and senior citizens through more than 70 programs
available at 29 locations throughout Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, For over 40 years, the Chinese-American Planning Council has
contributed significantly to the quality of life of Asian-Americans in
New York City through the services, skills, and resources it offers
while remaining mindful of its goals of economic self-sufficiency and
integration into the American mainstream, as well as of the importance
of its rich cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, Each year the Chinese-American Planning Council hosts a bene-
fit dinner to welcome and celebrate the Chinese New Year and to honor
outstanding individuals for their contributions to the Asian-American
community; and
WHEREAS, This year, the Chinese-American Planning Council proudly
recognizes as its Honoree of the Year, David Ng, Executive Editor of the
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, an award-winning journalist, and one of the
nation's highest ranking Asian-American newspaper executives; and
WHEREAS, The Chinese-American Planning Council will also present
Community Service Awards to Patrick Ng, President of Po Wing Hong Food
Market, one of the largest grocery wholesalers in New York City, and to
Dr. Eric Sin-kam Poon, M.D., FAAP, a Chinatown Pediatrician, both of
whom have a reputation for giving back to the community and supporting
numerous organizations and programs benefiting its citizens; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing the strength of its commitment and leadership, on
the occasion of its Annual Chinese New Year Dinner this Legislative Body
is pleased to honor the Chinese-American Planning Council, applauding
its endeavors, joining with it in welcoming the Year of the Ox, and
paying tribute to the honorees of the evening; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor and pay tribute to the Chinese-American Planning Council, recog-
nizing its extensive contributions to the Chinese-American people of the
City and State of New York upon the auspicious occasion of its 44th
Anniversary Chinese New Year Dinner on January 29, 2009, welcoming the
Year of the Ox; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mr. David Chen, Executive Director of the Chinese-American
Planning Council, Inc., 150 Elizabeth Street, New York, New York 10012.
