LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the New York State Health Foundation
and Preferred Health Partners upon the occasion of hosting its NYSHealth
Diabetes Campaign Event on Friday, April 8, 2011

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
days that are set aside to increase awareness of serious health issues
that affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the New York State Health Foundation and Preferred Health Partners upon
the occasion of hosting its NYSHealth Diabetes Campaign Event on Friday,
April 8, 2011; and
WHEREAS, This special function entitled, "Diabetes in Brooklyn: We Can
Do Better!" will be held at the Brooklyn Borough Hall in Brooklyn, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Nearly 1.8 million New Yorkers have diabetes; in New York
City, people with diabetes are now hospitalized at nearly 80% higher
than the national rate; and
WHEREAS, The borough of Brooklyn is hit especially hard, with nearly
one in 10 borough residents having diabetes; some neighborhoods have
even higher rates, including East New York, Williamsburg-Bushwick, and
Bedford-Stuyvesant Crown Heights; and
WHEREAS, In 2008, the New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth)
launched a five-year NYSHealth Diabetes Campaign to reverse this epidem-
ic; the Foundation is especially interested in targeting some of the
hardest-hit communities in New York to address the disproportionate
impact of diabetes; and
WHEREAS, Presenters will examine ways health care providers, community
leaders, neighborhood organizations, and others can combat the disease;
and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body, representing the citizens of the State
of New York, recognizes the importance of bringing awareness to this
serious health issue; losing weight through regular physical activity
and healthy eating will assist to prevent or delay the onset of
diabetes; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the New York State Health Foundation and Preferred Health Part-
ners upon the occasion of hosting its NYSHealth Diabetes Campaign Event;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the New York State Health Foundation and Preferred Health
Partners.
