LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the American Cancer Society of Brook-
lyn upon the occasion of hosting its Pink and Black Tie Gala

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions which would devote themselves to the welfare of the community and
its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the American Cancer Society of Brooklyn upon the occasion of hosting its
Pink and Black Tie Gala on Thursday, May 12, 2011; and
WHEREAS, This fine event is to also acknowledge several distinguished
honorees, including: Steven Cohen, General Manager of the Brooklyn
Cyclones Organization; Antonio D. Martin, Executive Director of Kings
County Hospital Center; and Malik Yoba, Actor, Educator, Inspirational
Speaker and Author; and
WHEREAS, The goal of the Pink and Black Tie Gala is to raise funds in
support of the American Cancer Society of Brooklyn's Regional Office;
the office is dedicated to serving the more than 10,000 Brooklyn resi-
dents who are diagnosed with cancer each year in many critical forms;
and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society (ACS) of Brooklyn is the local
chapter of the national organization, and like all local ACS chapters,
it focuses on service, raising funds to pay for these programs, and the
national American Cancer Society research program which is the largest
private cancer research program in the world; and
WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society was started by a group of volun-
teers in 1913 in New York City; it has since grown into one of the larg-
est nonprofit health organizations in the United States; while most of
its focus through the 20th century has been on raising funds for
research, the American Cancer Society also became increasingly committed
to having a significant public health impact on cancer; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the American Cancer Society of Brooklyn upon the occasion of
hosting its Pink and Black Tie Gala; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the American Cancer Society of Brooklyn, and to the aforemen-
tioned honorees.
