LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Josephine Beckmann upon the occasion of
her induction into the Fontbonne Hall Academy Hall of Fame on May 4,
2011

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend individuals who have distinguished themselves in their chosen
field of endeavor, in their community, or through a lifetime of good
citizenship; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Josephine Beckmann upon the occasion of her induction into the Fontbonne
Hall Academy Hall of Fame on May 4, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Josephine Beckmann will be honored at the school's Fleur de
Lys Dinner Dance, to be held at Gargiulo's Restaurant in Brooklyn on
Wednesday, May 4, 2011; and
WHEREAS, The greatest asset of any society is its children and the
hope and promise they represent for the future; Brooklyn's Fontbonne
Hall Academy has a proud and rich history of providing young women with
an educational foundation which is both strong and enduring; and
WHEREAS, Fontbonne Hall Academy has been a leader in educating young
women for more than 71 years; it is a college-preparatory school whose
mission is to offer a superior educational program while forming and
empowering young women of confidence and compassion; located in Bay
Ridge, Brooklyn, its students come from southwest Brooklyn, southern
Queens and Staten Island; and
WHEREAS, Each year at its Fleur de Lys Dinner Dance, Fontbonne Hall
Academy proudly honors outstanding members of the Fontbonne family and
community who exemplify and support its mission and whose lives and
accomplishments epitomize the character and tenets of the school,
inducting them into its Hall of Fame; Josephine Beckmann truly merits
this high honor; and
WHEREAS, A 1986 graduate of Our Lady of Perpetual Help High School,
also an all girls high school, Josephine Beckmann went on to earn a
Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from Saint Francis
College in 1990; and
WHEREAS, Josephine Beckmann began a full-time career working for the
New York City Council in 1990; working for Council Member Stephen
DiBrienza, she served as a community liaison, working with local govern-
ment agencies to resolve community based problems, organizing graffiti
cleanups, and working closely with block associations and neighborhood
groups to refurbish local parks and playgrounds; and
WHEREAS, In 1994, Josephine Beckmann moved to Dyker Heights with her
young family and though she continued to work for the New York City
Council until 2001, she also quickly became an active and valued member
of her new community as well; and
WHEREAS, In 1997, she rejuvenated the 800 Block Association of 70th
Street and worked with residents on local quality of life issues; her
local community activism continued through 2002, when she started the
United Neighbors Association of Fort Hamilton Parkway, a local civic
organization which grew to over 100 member families living adjacent to
the Fort Hamilton Parkway shopping strip from 66th Street to 74th
Street, where she raised awareness of the need for the regulation of
Internet Cafes, organized semi-annual graffiti cleanups and worked with
the 68th Police Precinct to deal with local safety concerns; and
WHEREAS, In November 2003, Josephine Beckmann became District Manager
of Community Board Ten, serving ably in this capacity, she has been a
staunch advocate for the residents of Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Fort

Hamilton, working diligently on all city service delivery problems
brought to the attention of the District Office; and
WHEREAS, Recently, Josephine Beckmann was happy to be able to assist
Fontbonne Hall Academy gain approval for a soon to be installed traffic
light on the corner of Shore Road and 99th Street which will greatly
enhance the safety of Fontbonne students and area residents; and
WHEREAS, Josephine Beckmann is also a strong supporter of teen commu-
nity service and enjoys teaching area students about civic involvement;
in addition, she serves as a member of the 68th Precinct Community Coun-
cil and the Dyker Heights Civic Association and is a parishioner at
Saint Ephrem Roman Catholic Church in Dyker Heights; and
WHEREAS, In recognition and appreciation of her service to her commu-
nity, she has received numerous citations from local officials, as well
as from local community-based organizations including the American
Cancer Society Relay for Life, Advocates for Services for the Blind-Mul-
ti-Handicapped, the 68th Precinct Community Council, and the Neighbor-
hood Improvement Association; and
WHEREAS, With Josephine Beckmann throughout have been her husband John
Beckmann, a New York City Police Department Lieutenant, and their daugh-
ters, Jayne and Annemarie, all of whom are proud to be part of her life
and rejoice in her many achievements; and
WHEREAS, Josephine Beckmann is an outstanding example to the youth of
the community, especially the young women of Fontbonne Hall Academy, on
how to give back, having spent so much working on behalf others, includ-
ing Fontbonne Hall Academy, which is fittingly proud to induct her into
its Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such outstanding accomplishment are brought to its attention,
they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of the
great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Josephine Beckmann upon the occasion of her induction into the
Fontbonne Hall Academy Hall of Fame at its Fleur de Lys Dinner Dance on
May 4, 2011; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Josephine Beckmann.
