LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Herb and Marilyn Holland upon the occa-
sion of their designation as recipients of a 2011 Circle of Humanity
Award by the Temple Israel of Albany on May 5, 2011

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Herb and Marilyn Holland have given not only of their time
and energies but also of their competence, intelligence and leadership
and consequently have been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Herb and Mari-
lyn Holland upon the occasion of their designation as recipients of a
2011 Circle of Humanity Award by the Temple Israel of Albany to be cele-
brated at its annual Awards Dinner at Temple Israel in Albany, New York,
on Thursday, May 5, 2011; and
WHEREAS, This prestigious award is presented to individuals and insti-
tutions who reach out to others and who devote themselves to making a
positive difference in their community and beyond; Herb and Marilyn
Holland epitomize this definition; and
WHEREAS, Both Marilyn and Herb Holland are graduates of New York State
College for Teachers; Marilyn went on to manage the office of an automo-
bile parts store chain for several years; Herb was a social studies
teacher, a middle school principal, and a high school principal, and
later went on to join the State Education Department and serve as the
Chief of the Bureau of School Registration; and
WHEREAS, Following his retirement from State service, Herb Holland
joined the adjunct faculty of the College of Saint Rose; he has also
served as a Member of the Education Committee of the Maimonides Hebrew
Day School, and as Commander of Post 105 of the Jewish War Veterans; and
WHEREAS, Herb and Marilyn Holland have been called upon to contribute
their time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and
have always given of themselves unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Herb and Marilyn Holland have been active members of Temple
Israel for the past fifty years; together they helped to found and lead
two social clubs for young married couples as well as helped to start
two Chavurot; and
WHEREAS, Both Herb and Marilyn Holland have been Presidents of the
Hebrew School's Parent-Teacher Association, as well as were recipients
of the Men's Club Yasher Koach Award; and
WHEREAS, Marilyn has worked in the Sisterhood gift shop, has performed
with Arazim, Temple Israel's dance group, and is a life member of Hadas-
sah; Herb served on the Temple's Board and also served as Vice President
of the congregation, President of the Men's Club, and Chairman of the
Cemetery Committee; together they have chaired concerts including that
of Naomi Shemer; and
WHEREAS, Herb was Chairman of the Bingo Committee and continues to be
a bingo worker; while Marilyn was in charge of the bingo food kitchen
for many years, she still volunteers weekly as well as coordinates
others to work each Monday night; and
WHEREAS, With them throughout have been their wonderful children,
Sheryl, Lynn, David, Debra, and the late Stephen, as well as their seven
loving grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, all of whom feel
privileged to be part of their lives and rejoice in their achievements;
and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of their community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Herb and Marilyn Holland have stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the wellbeing and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Herb and Marilyn Holland upon the occasion of their designation as
recipients of a 2011 Circle of Humanity Award by the Temple Israel of
Albany on May 5, 2011; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Herb and Marilyn Holland.
