LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Ex Chief John W. Farraday upon the
occasion of his designation for special recognition after 50 years of
dedicated service to the Syosset Fire Department
WHEREAS, The firefighters of New York State are renowned throughout the
Nation; their reputation is synonymous with excellence in the arduous
field of fire protection and prevention; and
WHEREAS, Since the early days of "teapot steamers," the volunteer
firefighter has been the cornerstone of our great Nation's efforts to
spare us from the ravages of fire; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to commend Firefighter John W.
Farraday upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition
after 50 years of dedicated service to the Syosset Fire Department to be
observed at its 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Fire Headquarters in
Syosset, New York, on Saturday, May 14, 2011; and
WHEREAS, Born November 11, 1941, in Corona, Queens, New York, John W.
Farraday, along with his family, later moved to Valley Stream, New York,
in 1953 and settled into what would become the Farraday family home on
Jackson Court in Syosset, New York; almost 60 years later, Jack, as he
is known to most, and Betty, his school sweetheart, still reside there
today; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Syosset High School, John W. Farraday worked in
various jobs, including at Triple S Cleaners and Nick's Sunoco; he
joined the Syosset Fire Department (SFD) in March of 1961; and
WHEREAS, Upon joining the SFD, John W. Farraday was already a member
of the United States Naval Reserve; later in 1961, he went to active
duty status and proudly served his country aboard the U.S.S. Arcadia, a
Klondike-class destroyer tender, until 1964; and
WHEREAS, After returning to Syosset, John W. Farraday applied for a
position with the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD), and in August
of 1965, he was sworn into the NCPD; he worked as a patrolman in the
Sixth Precinct, in Manhasset for the next seven years before joining the
NCPD's elite-Bureau of Special Operations in 1972; six years later, Jack
was promoted to Detective and went back to the Sixth Precinct Detective
Squad, where he served for over two decades, until his retirement in
2000; and
WHEREAS, John W. Farraday has had a distinguished career in his half-
century in the fire service, serving as Lieutenant and Captain of Compa-
ny 5 and rising up the ranks of the Chief's Office, culminating in his
term as Chief of Department from April 1979 to April 1980; and
WHEREAS, Involved in many local and state firematic associations,
including serving as President of the Fifth Battalion Chiefs organiza-
tion from 1989 to 1991, John W. Farraday was named the SFD's 1980 Fire-
man of the Year and has faithfully kept the books of Company 5 as its
Treasurer since 1993; and
WHEREAS, John W. Farraday has been described as one of the better
examples of American manhood, intelligent, industrious, capable, and
eager to learn; he is ambitious and dependable, polite and courteous and
has a wide circle of friends; and
WHEREAS, Volunteer firefighters and fire departments not only provide
the critical service of fire protection but also engage in other activ-
ities of great benefit and importance to the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his loving wife, Betty Winkler,
their three wonderful children, John, Coleen, and Michele, and six ador-
ing grandchildren, Courtney, Erin, John, Caitlyn, Gregory, and Grayson,
all of whom feel privileged to be part of his life and rejoice in his
achievements; and
WHEREAS, During the summer months, the Farradays enjoy spending time
with family at their beloved log cabin home in Bolton Landing; and
WHEREAS, It takes a special dedication, a strong desire to help others
and a tireless sense of community to forsake precious time with family
and friends to respond to the signal that a neighbor is in need; John W.
Farraday is such a firefighter; throughout 50 years of devoted service,
this volunteer heroically performed, above and beyond the call of duty,
those responsibilities which define the task of fire protection; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Firefighter Ex Chief John W. Farraday for 50 years of distin-
guished service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Ex Chief John W. Farraday.
