LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Patchogue Van Guard Hose Company
upon the occasion of celebrating its 120th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those exemplary organizations within the State of New York that serve
our citizens and achieve significant milestones; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Patchogue Van Guard Hose Company upon the occasion of celebrating
its 120th Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, The Van Guard Hose Company is part of the Patchogue Fire
Department, serving the residents of Patchogue Village in Suffolk Coun-
ty; and
WHEREAS, The destruction of Captain G.G. Horton's barn at the lower
half of South Ocean Avenue during the summer of 1890 was the incentive
for the organization of a firefighting unit in that section of the
village; and
WHEREAS, At the Fire Director's meeting on August 18, 1890, Chief
Edwin Bailey reported a request had been made for a hose cart in the
south section of the village; and
WHEREAS, Chief Bailey was then directed to purchase a two-wheeled cart
and 500 feet of hose, and locate them as he deemed best; and
WHEREAS, Appreciating the action of the directors, 14 residents of the
southern part of Patchogue met at the residence of Mrs. Alfred C. Mott
and organized the Van Guard Hose Company; and
WHEREAS, The first regular meeting of the Van Guard Hose Company was
held on January 13, 1891; and
WHEREAS, Since that time, the members of the Patchogue Fire Depart-
ment's Van Guard Hose Company have dutifully and bravely served the
residents of south Patchogue Village over the course of the past 120
years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such enduring courage and accomplishment are brought to our
attention, it is appropriate to publicly proclaim and commend those
individuals for the edification and emulation of others; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Patchogue Van Guard Hose Company upon the occasion of cele-
brating its 120th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Patchogue Fire Department.
