LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the 1982 Mohawk Valley Stars upon the
occasion of their induction into the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who distinguish themselves through their excep-
tional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
the 1982 Mohawk Valley Stars upon the occasion of their induction into
the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame; this auspicious occasion will be
celebrated at the Hall's Class of 2011 Induction Ceremony, to be held on
Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the Radisson Hotel-Utica Centre in Utica, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Winners of the first-ever Atlantic Coast Hockey League Cham-
pionship with a 28-18-1 record, the 1982 Mohawk Valley Stars captured
the first professional hockey title in the Mohawk Valley since 1970; and
WHEREAS, The 1982 Mohawk Valley Stars are the first team to be honored
with induction into the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Coached by 1990 Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
William "Bill" Horton, who was named the ACHL Coach of the Year, the
1982 Mohawk Valley Stars were victorious over the Salem Raiders, coached
by Pat Kelly, in the championship series and were the recipients of the
Inaugural Payne Trophy; and
WHEREAS, The 1982 Mohawk Valley Stars were led by Richard Suwek's 54
points and Ed Smith's 24 goals; Bill Provencher and Randy Ireland each
had 14 wins in goal for the Stars; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the 1982 Mohawk
Valley Stars; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such outstanding athletic accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this great
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to honor the 1982 Mohawk
Valley Stars for their extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are
a tribute to their skill, dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations with
praise and pride to honor the 1982 Mohawk Valley Stars upon the occasion
of their induction into the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame.
