LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the
Ticonderoga Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Ticonderoga Chapter of the Daughters
of the American Revolution, Chapter 1-163-NY, on Saturday, June 11,
2011; and
WHEREAS, The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), founded in
1890 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a non-profit, non-politi-
cal volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patri-
otism, preserving American history, and securing America's future
through better education for children; and
WHEREAS, As one of the most inclusive genealogical societies in the
country, DAR boasts 165,000 members in 3,000 chapters across the United
States and internationally; its motto is God, Home, and Country; and
WHEREAS, The National Society has 38 standing committees which promote
its three purposes of historic preservation, promotion of education, and
patriotic endeavors; these include educational programs, scholarship
competitions, citizenship awards, school contests, sponsorship of
schools for underprivileged children, literacy programs, genealogical
records, national genealogical library, lineage research, DAR Museum,
community service, national defense, units overseas, Constitution and
United States flag, conservation, commemorative events, naturalization,
and volunteerism; and
WHEREAS, One of 3,000 DAR chapters worldwide, the Ticonderoga Chapter
1-163-NY of the Daughters of the American Revolution was first organized
on June 30, 1911, and chartered July 19, 1922; the picturesque and
historic town of Ticonderoga, New York, figured prominently in the Amer-
ican Revolution as well as the French & Indian War; it is located on the
shores of Lake Champlain and Lake George, in the foothills of the
Adirondack Mountains; and
WHEREAS, Ticonderoga is home to the strategically-important Fort
Ticonderoga, site of the colonists' first victory in the American Revo-
lution; on May 10, 1775, Benedict Arnold, along with Ethan Allen and his
Green Mountain Boys, captured the fort from the British; later that
year, Henry Knox dragged the cannon from the fort on sledges to Dorches-
ter Heights in Boston, an extraordinary feat which caused the British to
evacuate Boston Harbor; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Ticonderoga Chapter of the
Daughters of the American Revolution; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Ticonderoga Chapter of the Daughters of the American
Revolution.
