LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Daniel Igor Branovan upon the occa-
sion of his designation for special recognition for his work on Project
Chernobyl

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lives, personal endeavors and
community service are an example and inspiration to their colleagues,
friends, and family; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Daniel Igor Branovan upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition for his work on Project Chernobyl; this auspicious occasion
will be celebrated on June 15, 2011, in Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1980, Daniel Igor Branovan, M.D. emigrated to the United
States from the then Soviet Union; he is a graduate of Haverford
College, the Stanford University School of Medicine and the Harvard
School of Public Health; and
WHEREAS, Currently serving as the Director of Thyroid Center and
Director of Rhinology Division at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary,
Dr. Daniel Igor Branovan has practiced at the New York Eye and Ear
Infirmary since 1998; and
WHEREAS, Recognized as one of the most outstanding physicians and
surgeons in his specialty by numerous publications, Dr. Daniel Igor
Branovan is the only Russian-speaking specialist in New York to be
repeatedly named to the prestigious list of "Best Doctors in America" by
NEW YORK MAGAZINE; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Daniel Igor Branovan is also a Founder and President of
Project Chernobyl, an organization established in 2007 to address the
growing frequency of thyroid cancers among hundreds of thousands of
immigrants in New York City from the affected regions in Ukraine, Bela-
rus and Russia after exposure during the Chernobyl nuclear accident; and
WHEREAS, Project Chernobyl has expanded its scope to regions in New
York State with markedly increased thyroid cancer rates among the gener-
al population; a new project, "Project 9/11 - Chernobyl in Your Back-
yard," offers a cost-effective method of screening 9/11 first responders
for thyroid cancer; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Daniel Igor Branovan has organized and
Co-Chaired a series of international symposiums at the United Nations on
the medical consequences of both the Chernobyl nuclear accident and
recent Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan; and
WHEREAS, Currently serving as President of American Forum of Russian-
speaking Jewry/RAJI, the leading umbrella organization for immigrants
from the former Soviet Union, Dr. Daniel Igor Branovan is also a Co-Pre-
sident of the United Russian American Political Action Committee for New
York State; he serves as Board Member and Chair of the Russian Division
of the American Jewish Committee and is a founding member of "Doctors
Against Terrorism"; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his professional and communi-
ty service, a period of constructive involvement, Dr. Daniel Igor Brano-
van has stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor, and has earned
the respect and admiration of his colleagues, family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Dr. Daniel Igor Branovan has
displayed throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Dr. Daniel Igor
Branovan and to Project Chernobyl; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this great Empire
State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Daniel Igor Branovan upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition for his work on Project Chernobyl; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Daniel Igor Branovan.
