LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Deirdre Glenn of Newburgh, New York,
upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by the
Downing Park Planning Committee

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lives, personal endeavors and
community service are an example and inspiration to their colleagues,
friends, and family; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Deirdre Glenn of Newburgh, New York, upon the occasion of her desig-
nation for special recognition by the Downing Park Planning Committee;
this auspicious occasion will be celebrated at a dinner to be held in
her honor on Saturday, July 16, 2011; and
WHEREAS, The Downing Park Planning Committee is a grass roots communi-
ty group that formed in the late 1980s to revitalize a historic treasure
in Newburgh, New York, known as Downing Park; and
WHEREAS, Incorporated in 1987, the Downing Park Planning Committee's
mission is to: act as an advocate for the preservation of Newburgh's
aesthetically and historically significant landmark, Downing Park, which
is part of the City's East End Historic District; generate use of Down-
ing Park by the entire community by sponsoring events and encouraging
other organizations to do the same; seek financial assistance through
grants, fundraising activities and private donations to revitalize and
maintain the Park; and act as a consulting body by setting guidelines
and providing advice regarding future restoration and/or physical alter-
ation of the Park in accordance with amendments to the accepted Master
Plan; and
WHEREAS, After successful career endeavors which included archaeology
in Ireland, management at the University of Pittsburgh and at the
Irish-American Cultural Institute in Dublin, Ireland, and New York,
Deirdre Glenn returned to Newburgh, New York, where she is very active
in the community; and
WHEREAS, Deirdre Glenn served as the Executive Director of Habitat for
Humanity of Greater Newburgh for over a decade; during her tenure, the
organization increased its capacity from two houses per year to one that
builds seven to 10 houses per year; and
WHEREAS, Under the superb leadership of Deirdre Glenn, Habitat for
Humanity of Greater Newburgh became the second most active affiliate
throughout the Hudson Valley and a leader in New York State; in addi-
tion, she was instrumental in the development of a "ReStore," a business
enterprise in the recycling of building materials to provide program
income; and
WHEREAS, Deirdre Glenn is currently developing a new not-for-profit
organization, Newburgh Armory Unity Center, Inc., to assist the City of
Newburgh in running the Newburgh Armory; this new organization will
coordinate the large number of groups and events that utilize the Armory
throughout the year and make it a key part of the redevelopment of the
City; and
WHEREAS, Deirdre Glenn currently serves as Warden at St. George's
Episcopal Church and is a member of the Board of Directors of both the
Newburgh Chamber Music and the Newburgh Preservation Association; she is
also a member of the City of Newburgh Planning Board; and

WHEREAS, Deirdre Glenn is the proud mother of two sons: John Carlos
Lantis and Colin de Paor; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her professional and communi-
ty service, a period of constructive involvement, Deirdre Glenn of
Newburgh, New York, has stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor,
and has earned the respect and admiration of her colleagues, family and
friends; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Deirdre Glenn has displayed through-
out her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this great Empire
State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Deirdre Glenn of Newburgh, New York, upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the Downing Park Planning Commit-
tee; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Deirdre Glenn, Newburgh, New York.
