LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of David T. Cocks, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, David T. Cocks of Walden, New York, died on Sunday, June 19,
2011, at the age of 53; and
WHEREAS, The son of the late William T. Cocks and Elizabeth Roebuck
Cocks, David T. Cocks was born on January 18, 1958, in Schenectady, New
York; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Valley Central High School, Orange County
Community College, and Mount Saint Mary College, David T. Cocks joined
the Walden Savings Bank in 1978; and
WHEREAS, Beginning his career as a teller, David T. Cocks held virtu-
ally every position at the Walden Savings Bank; in 2000, he was elected
to the position of President; in 2001, he became President and CEO and
in 2002, he was elected to the Bank's Board of Directors; and
WHEREAS, David T. Cocks distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, David T. Cocks' commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, David T. Cocks was a founding member of the Walden Community
Council, a former member of the Board of the Walden Day Care Center and
former President of the Josephine Louise Public Library; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man also held positions on the Boards of the
Walden Rotary Club, the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, the Community
Foundation of Orange & Sullivan Counties, HOSPICE of Orange County and
the Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America, Hudson Valley Council;
and
WHEREAS, David T. Cocks achieved the Boy Scout rank of Eagle Scout as
a young man, and received the Boy Scout's Distinguished Citizen Award
from the Hudson Valley Council in 2007; he was due to receive the Joseph
A. Bonura Leadership Excellence Award from Mount Saint Mary's in Decem-
ber of 2011; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his father, William T. Cocks, David T. Cocks
is survived by his wife, Janice A. Van Wyck Cocks; his daughter, Saman-
tha E. Cocks; his son, Brian J. Cocks; his mother, Elizabeth "Betty"
Cocks; brothers, Paul (Sarah) Cocks, Peter (Janice) Cocks and William
(Marisa) Cocks; as well as several nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, David T. Cocks leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of David T. Cocks, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of David T. Cocks.
