LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Egbe Omo Yoruba Association of
Yoruba Descendants in North America upon the occasion of hosting its
19th Annual National Convention

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with its
time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those organiza-
tions which foster ethnic pride and enhance the profile of cultural
diversity which strengthens the fabric of the communities of New York
State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the Egbe Omo
Yoruba Association of Yoruba Descendants in North America upon the occa-
sion of hosting its 19th Annual National Convention on September 8-11,
2011, at the Long Island Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Union-
dale, New York; and
WHEREAS, The event will attract eminent Yoruban leaders from Nigeria
and in the Diaspora including governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers,
religious leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals from diverse fields;
and
WHEREAS, The Yoruba are a nationality with a numerical strength of
over 50 million, the majority of whom live in southwestern Nigeria in
West Africa; the National Association of Yoruba Descendants in North
America is an umbrella organization for Yoruban migrants in the United
States and Canada with over 18 member chapters across the region; and
WHEREAS, The Association of Yoruba Descendants (Egbe Omo Yoruba) New
York and Greater New York are members of the National Association of
Yoruba Descendants in North America and are co-hosting the 2011 National
Convention; both organizations enjoy their not-for-profit status with
philanthropic, cultural and heritage missions that people of African
descent strongly identify with; and
WHEREAS, This festivity will provide a marvelous opportunity for
networking and also foster public-private partnership as it focuses on
economic and political empowerment of the Yoruba Nation with a partic-
ular emphasis on the role of the Diaspora community beyond 2011; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1993, the Egbe Omo Yoruba Association of Yoruba
Descendants in North America has transformed into a formidable entity
serving and promoting the interests and welfare of Yorubans through
unity and empowerment of the Yoruba in Nigeria and around the world; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Egbe Omo Yoruba Association of Yoruba Descendants in North
America upon the occasion of hosting its 19th Annual National Conven-
tion; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Egbe Omo Yoruba Association of Yoruba Descendants in
North America, and the Egbe Omo Yoruba Association of Yoruba Descendants
in New York and Greater New York.
