LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Al "Bummy" Davis, posthumously, upon the
occasion of his induction into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame
and Museum on April 29, 2012

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who distinguished themselves in their lifetime
through their exceptional performance, and attained unprecedented
success and the highest level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to honor the life
and accomplishments of prominent citizens of the State of New York whose
athletic endeavors served to enhance the reputation of New York State;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that Al "Bummy"
Davis distinguished himself by his outstanding lifetime athletic
achievements which contributed to the welfare of his community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
Al "Bummy" Davis, posthumously, upon the occasion of his induction into
the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum; this auspicious
occasion will be celebrated at a ceremony to be held on Sunday, April
29, 2012, at the Suffolk Y and Jewish Community Center in Commack, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Born on January 26, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, Albert Abra-
ham Davidoff, known as Al "Bummy" Davis, was an outstanding American
lightweight and welterweight boxer; and
WHEREAS, A rough slugger with a powerful left hook, Al "Bummy" Davis
began his professional boxing career in May 1937 when he won a four-
round decision; he defeated his first 21 opponents, 15 by knockouts
(including nine knockouts in the first three rounds); and
WHEREAS, Al "Bummy" Davis recorded 66 career wins, with 47 knockouts;
he was named to RING MAGAZINE's list of the 100 greatest punchers of all
time; and
WHEREAS, During his illustrious prize fighting career in the 1930s and
1940s, Al "Bummy" Davis fought some of the greatest boxers of his era,
including Lou Ambers, Henry Armstrong, Bob Montgomery and Rocky Grazi-
ano; and
WHEREAS, Al "Bummy" Davis enlisted in the United States Army in 1941;
and
WHEREAS, On November 21, 1945, at the age of 25, Al "Bummy" Davis was
fatally shot to death, a victim of an armed robbery in the Brownsville
section of Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, The auspicious occasion of his posthumous induction into the
National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum provides a unique oppor-
tunity for this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Al
"Bummy" Davis; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to honor Al "Bummy" Davis for
his extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are a tribute to his
athletic prowess; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations with
praise and pride to honor Al "Bummy" Davis, posthumously, upon the occa-
sion of his induction into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and
Museum; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Alan Freedman, Director, The National Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame and Museum, 74 Hauppauge Road, Commack, New York 11725.
