LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Kayla Neville and John Yang upon the
occasion of winning a distinguished research award from the National
Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Environmental Health
Sciences

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and leaders
of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best exemplify the ideals
and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Kayla Neville and John Yang upon the occasion of receiving a research
award by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of
Environmental Health Sciences, celebrated at its annual convention in
Cincinnati, Ohio; and
WHEREAS, At the convention, Kayla Neville, a junior at Commack High
School, and John Yang, a senior at Great Neck South High School, were
awarded Best Basic Research Poster for their research with an exper-
imental nanoparticle; it was the first time this distinguished accolade
went to anyone other than professional researchers; and
WHEREAS, Kayla Neville and John Yang completed their research through
an internship sponsored by the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition and
the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition at Stony Brook University,
under the supervision of biomedical engineering professor Balaji Sithar-
aman; and
WHEREAS, For their award winning project, Kayla Neville and John Yang
conducted research with an experimental nanoparticle by injecting it
into human cells to see how much the body could tolerate; and
WHEREAS, If approved for humans, the nanoparticles can be injected
into a body before an MRI to help make the image clearer and easier for
doctors to read; this could allow physicians to spot previously hidden
tumors; the nanoparticles could also aid in the delivery of cancer-beat-
ing drugs; and
WHEREAS, Kayla Neville and John Yang recorded their findings in
detailed charts and graphs, displayed them on a poster board and
presented them at the National Cancer Institute and the National Insti-
tute of Environmental Health Sciences' annual convention; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to call attention
to those young people within our midst whose nationally acclaimed accom-
plishments bring pride to their families, their communities, and to the
State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Kayla Neville and John Yang upon the occasion of winning a distin-
guished research award from the National Cancer Institute and the
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kayla Neville and John Yang.
