LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Elizabeth McCormack upon the occasion of
her designation for special recognition

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the citi-
zens of the Empire State who, as they reach the fullness of years,
continue to be active and vital participants in the life of their commu-
nity; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Elizabeth McCormack upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition, to be celebrated on her 90th birthday; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth McCormack began her career in education as a teach-
er at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, Connecticut, becom-
ing its headmistress; as a young nun she inspired staff and deeply
touched the lives of the students, a tradition she continued later while
serving on the Board of Trustees of Hamilton, Cambridge, Spellman and
Marlboro Colleges along with the Julliard School of Music; and
WHEREAS, At Manhattanville College, Elizabeth McCormack was an alumna,
philosophy teacher, academic dean and president from 1966 to 1974; she
transformed the college from an elite Catholic women's institution to a
nationally recognized, non-denominational, coeducational institution;
and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth McCormack combines together the worlds of educa-
tion, medicine, foreign and national affairs, and the arts and philan-
thropy; she has served on national and international philanthropic
organizations, including: Philanthropic Advisor to the Rockefeller Fami-
ly and Associates; Assistant to the President of the Rockefeller Broth-
ers Fund; Deputy Chair of the Board of the Atlantic Philanthropies; and
Chair of the Board of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation;
and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth McCormack has received honorary doctoral degrees
from major educational institutions including Brandeis University,
Princeton College, The American University of Paris, the City University
of New York, Manhattanville College and Hamilton College; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth McCormack's unerring ability to create bonds of
friendship has served the exceptional efforts of the Asian Cultural
Council and the Trust for Mutual Understanding; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, Elizabeth McCormack has enriched the
lives of her family, friends and colleagues through her love and respect
for others, and through the wisdom which comes from many years of living
life to the fullest; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Elizabeth McCormack upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Elizabeth McCormack.
