LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Ronald B. Ely, former Sher-
iff of Wyoming County, and distinguished citizen and devoted member of
his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Ronald B. Ely, former Sheriff of Wyoming County, New York,
died on Friday, February 3, 2012, at the age of 65; and
WHEREAS, Born on July 17, 1946, in Warsaw, New York, the son of the
late Leon H. and Charlotte Sugg Ely, Ronald B. Ely was a 1964 graduate
of Arcade Central School; and
WHEREAS, Ronald B. Ely served in the United States Army during the
Vietnam War and was a 1977 graduate of the FBI Academy; and
WHEREAS, The Sheriff of Wyoming County, New York, from 2000 to 2004,
Ronald B. Ely also served for 27 years as its undersheriff, and held the
distinction of being the longest running undersheriff in New York State
history; prior to his service in the Sheriff's Department, he served in
the Arcade Police Department; and
WHEREAS, On the Board of Directors for SaSI, Ronald B. Ely worked on
the Canter for Cancer Walk-A-Thon, and served on the United Way Board;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, Ronald B. Ely was a member of the Wyoming County
Office for the Aging Board, and was a member of the Warsaw VFW and St.
Mary's Church in East Arcade, New York; and
WHEREAS, Known as the face of Wyoming County, Ronald B. Ely's entire
life was dedicated to the Sheriff's Office and to the people of Wyoming
County; and
WHEREAS, Ronald B. Ely was predeceased by his parents, Leon H. and
Charlotte Sugg Ely; a sister, Eleanor (Vincent) Barkewitz; and a broth-
er, Philip A. (Dorothy) Ely; and
WHEREAS, Survived by his wife, Lucille H. (nee Mazierski) Ely; Ronald
B. Ely is also survived by his four sons, Bruce Ely of Sardinia, Chris-
topher (Crystal) Ely of Florida, Shawn Ely of Arcade, and Jason Ely of
Arcade; and by four grandchildren, Jason, Tyler, Angela, and Emily
Grace; he is also survived by a brother, Hugh (Janet) Ely of Arcade, and
several nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Ronald B. Ely leaves
behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and will
remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; he will
be remembered as someone who made a positive difference in the lives of
others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Ronald B. Ely, former Sheriff of Wyoming County, and
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Ronald B. Ely.
