LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Nicola S. Marshall upon the occasion of
receiving the Women Who Dare to Be Different Award

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to publicly recognize
those extraordinary individuals who have made contributions to the
cultural enrichment of the State of New York and to the success and
progress of society in the course of their life's work; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Nicola S.
Marshall upon the occasion of receiving the Women Who Dare to Be Differ-
ent Award, to be celebrated on Saturday, March 31, 2012, at the Fleur de
Lis in Ridgewood, New York; and
WHEREAS, Born in Georgetown, Guyana, Nicola Marshall attended St.
Agnes Primary School and at the age of 6, moved to Paramaribo, Suriname,
with her mother; a few years later, she moved to Beijing, The People's
Republic of China where she received most of her middle school and high
school education; and
WHEREAS, While living in China, Nicola Marshall became interested in
socioeconomic issues and decided she wanted to play an active role in
international affairs and social services issues; she then moved to the
United States at the age of 16 and attended Nazareth Regional High
School, and later graduated from Brooklyn College where she received a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science; and
WHEREAS, In 1996, Nicola Marshall began working at a medical doctor's
office; while there, she began Project Relief, a program that assists
individuals in developing countries in desperate need of medical
supplies; and
WHEREAS, Nicola Marshall decided to enroll in nursing school and was
recipient of the Nursing Leadership Award; she was nominated to be the
speaker at the New York Institute of Technology's Nursing Pinning Cere-
mony for the Class of 2009, while she was the President of the Student
Nurses' Association; and
WHEREAS, Earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in May of
2009, Nicola Marshall later became a member of the NAACP, the Young
Professionals in Ministry at the Vanderveer Park United Methodist Park
Church, the Schenectady Avenue Block Association and the Golden Key
International Honour Society; her distinguished record merits the recog-
nition and respectful tribute of this Legislative Body; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Nicola S. Marshall upon the occasion of receiving the Women Who
Dare to Be Different Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Nicola S. Marshall.
