LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 300th Anniversary of St.
Peter's Church of Albany, New York, to be celebrated on April 21, 2012

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and this Nation to pay
tribute to those institutions and individuals who have contributed to
the ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes pleasure in commemorating the
300th Anniversary of St. Peter's Church of Albany, New York, to be cele-
brated at a Gala Cocktail Birthday Party on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at
The State Room in Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Three centuries after its founding, St. Peter's is still a
vital community resource; in addition to being an active house of
worship, the congregation services the larger needs of its community;
and
WHEREAS, During the winter months, St. Peter's Church opens its doors
as an overflow shelter for the Capital City Rescue Mission; and
WHEREAS, St. Peter's Church groups knit sweaters, hats and mittens to
distribute in the community and year round collect food for the area
food pantries; the youth group annually sponsors a dinner to raise money
for a charity; and
WHEREAS, St. Peter's Church sponsors numerous events to help aid char-
itable organizations such as Doctors Without Borders and the Smile
Train; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable congregation also supports The Schuyler Inn
Shoe Boxes, The Crop Walk, Equinox, Adopt a Family For Christmas, The
Uganda Orphans Program, Food for The Poor, the overflow shelter at First
Lutheran Church and Bowling for Beds; and
WHEREAS, Culturally, St. Peter's Church has been a frequent host site
for Albany's First Friday Arts Event; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, the highly regarded music program at St. Peter's
Church enriches the community through weekly organ recitals and annually
presents major choral works always free and open to the public; and
WHEREAS, As an edifice, St. Peter's Church is an architectural master-
piece; it is one of three National Landmarks in the City of Albany, the
others being the Capitol and City Hall; and
WHEREAS, St. Peter's Church stands on the threshold of tomorrow,
prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades while retaining
that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 300th Anniversary of St. Peter's Church of Albany, New
York, to be observed on April 21, 2012, fully confident that this
commemoration reflects the belief in those values which enhance the
dignity and purpose of life; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to St. Peter's Church, Albany, New York.
