LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Maggie Goldstein upon the occasion of
her designation as recipient of the Community Service Award

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Maggie Gold-
stein upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the Community
Service Award, to be celebrated at the 5th Annual Men of Distinction and
Women of Valor Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 17, 2012; and
WHEREAS, The Men of Distinction and Women of Valor Awards Ceremony is
held each year to honor and pay just tribute to outstanding individuals
whose leadership roles have had a significant impact on the daily lives
of the people of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Maggie Goldstein is a founding member and Executive Director
of the Social Development Center for Community Affairs, Inc.; in this
position, she is responsible for overseeing the organization's internal
and external development by creating partnerships with others who take a
strong stance on issues such as socioeconomic development that address
critical needs of young adults and adults alike and also promote
microentreprise in Central Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Prior to co-founding this organization, Ms. Goldstein was the
Executive Director at the Haitian American Alliance and a founding
member of the Consortium for Haitian Empowerment Inc.; she also hosted
several diversity symposiums/seminars and conferences at the Dag
Hammarskjold Auditorium-United Nations; and
WHEREAS, Maggie Goldstein is an active participant in all aspects of
the development and participatory advocacy of social responsibility,
sustainability and neighborhood/economic development; in 2008, she tran-
sitioned from her role as Executive Director to Chief Executive Officer
& General Manager of Gotham Career Institute; and
WHEREAS, This institution is a career school located in Valley Stream,
New York, offering approved New York State Department of Education-BPSS
entry-level certificate programs in allied healthcare, office adminis-
tration, and digital graphic design occupations; and
WHEREAS, A long-time champion of all forms of economic empowerment,
Ms. Goldstein was nominated and received the Mirabella "100 Women Who
Will Make A Difference" Award; she is member of the American Planners
Association (APA) as well as the American Political Science Administra-
tion-Society for Public Administration (APSA); and
WHEREAS, Maggie Goldstein holds a Dual-Masters in Public Adminis-
tration (MPA-UA) Public Administration & Policy-Urban Affairs from the
John Jay College of Criminal Justice, along with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in International Economics/Psychology from the University of
Nevada/Las Vegas; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Maggie Goldstein upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the Community Service Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Maggie Goldstein.
