LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera, Ph.D.
upon the occasion of his inauguration as the 19th President of Keuka
College

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lives, personal endeavors and
community service are an example and inspiration to their colleagues,
friends, and family; and
WHEREAS, It is also the practice of this Legislative Body to take note
of and publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and
character whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in this
great State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera, Ph.D. upon the occasion of his inaugu-
ration as the 19th President of Keuka College, to be celebrated on
Friday, May 4, 2012 at Norton Chapel, Keuka College in Keuka Park, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera completed his undergraduate
education in Venezuela and holds a master's degree and doctorate in
computing studies from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom; he
also earned a graduate certificate from Harvard University's Graduate
School of Education; and
WHEREAS, Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera, Ph.D. became the 19th presi-
dent of Keuka College on July 1, 2011; and
WHEREAS, He came to Keuka from Rochester Institute of Technology
(RIT), where he served as Dean of the B. Thomas Golisano College of
Computing and Information Sciences and professor; and
WHEREAS, Formerly, Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera was professor and department
head of computer science and Yamacraw project director at Southern Poly-
technic State University in Marietta, Georgia, and member of the execu-
tive committee in the Georgia Tech-led Yamacraw project; and
WHEREAS, Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera was a senior member of the
technical staff at Carnegie Mellon's Software Engineering Institute,
taught in the Master of Software Engineering program, and conducted
research in product line engineering; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera served as chair
of the software engineering department at Monmouth University and on the
computer science faculties at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virgi-
nia, and SUNY Binghamton; and
WHEREAS, Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera also taught at the Universi-
dad Centro-Occidental and was senior software engineer and department
head at Empresa Regional de Computacion, both in Venezuela; and
WHEREAS, He has consulted for a number of firms and government agen-
cies including the New York Stock Exchange (SIAC), MITRE Corp., Insti-
tute for Defense Analysis, General Electric, Singer-Link, TRW, EG&G, and
IBM, among others; and
WHEREAS, Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera has also provided profes-
sional expertise to international organizations including the European
Software Institute, Australian Defense Science and Technology Office,
Kyoto Computing Gaikum, Kuwait University, Cairo University, and Malay-
sia University of Technology; and

WHEREAS, The author of more than 90 publications, Professor Jorge L.
Diaz-Herrera is in his third, three-year term of the IEEE Computer Soci-
ety Distinguished Visitor Program; and
WHEREAS, He was a leading writer of the Software Engineering Profes-
sional Examination, and co-editor of the Software Engineering volume of
the IEEE-CS/ACM Computing Curricula project; he is also an active member
of the Deans group of the Computer Research Association in Washington,
D.C.; and
WHEREAS, Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera serves on numerous boards,
including the New York State Universal Broadband Council Digital Litera-
cy Committee, the Strong National Museum of Play Board of Trustees, and
Gallaudet University Board of Trustees; and
WHEREAS, He was co-chair of the Rochester Mayor's Office IT Steering
Committee and a member of the Puerto Rican Youth Development Center
Board of Trustees; and
WHEREAS, Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera also served three years in
the National Science Foundation CISE Advisory Committee, and three years
in Carnegie Mellon's SEI Technical Advisory Group in Pittsburgh, Penn-
sylvania; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his professional and communi-
ty service, a period of constructive involvement, Professor Jorge L.
Diaz-Herrera, Ph.D. has stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor,
and has earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues, family and
friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera, Ph.D. upon the occasion of his
inauguration as the 19th President of Keuka College, and for his signif-
icant contributions to education in New York State; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Professor Jorge L. Diaz-Herrera, Ph.D.
