LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 75th Anniversary of the David
A. Howe Public Library

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge certain exemplary institutions that improve
the quality of life for communities within this great Empire State
through increased access to educational and recreational resources; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 75th Anniversary of the David A. Howe Public Library in Wells-
ville, New York; and
WHEREAS, The library was chartered the Wellsville Public Library on
June 5, 1894, with a charter from the New York State Education Depart-
ment; and
WHEREAS, The new building was funded through a bequest from the estate
of Allegany County native and businessman David A. Howe; the Georgian
Colonial style building was constructed beginning in 1935, and dedicated
as the David A. Howe Public Library on May 13, 1937; and
WHEREAS, The mission of the David A. Howe Public Library is to
provide books and other materials for the informational and recreational
needs of all ages; to provide programs and services to encourage reading
and research for students starting with the preschool level; and to
afford a meeting place for cultural, social and educational opportu-
nities; and
WHEREAS, The David A. Howe Public Library is the largest public
library in Allegany County; and library receives over 100,000 visitors
annually; and
WHEREAS, A center of cultural and social activity for the Wellsville
community, the David A. Howe Public Library has hosted theatrical and
musical performances, film festivals, political speeches and meetings;
in addition, the facility has served as the venue for diverse community
activities including World War II volunteer projects, clogging exhibi-
tions, lectures, club meetings, antique appraisals, and more; and
WHEREAS, The David A. Howe Public Library offers more than 110,000
items for use by its patrons, including books, periodicals, videos,
DVDs, audio recordings and electronic resources; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commemorate
milestones in the histories of certain exceptional public libraries in
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the David A. Howe Public Library;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the David A. Howe Public Library.
