LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Brian O'Shaughnessy upon the occasion of
his designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the
Capital District Labor-Religion Coalition on May 16, 2012

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Brian O'Shaughnessy has given not only of his time and ener-
gies but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and conse-
quently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Brian
O'Shaughnessy upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Lifetime Achievement Award by the Capital District Labor-Religion Coali-
tion, to be celebrated at its 15th Annual Memorial Awards Dinner on
Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at the Polish American Citizens Club in Albany,
New York; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Catholic Central High School in 1963,
Brian O'Shaughnessy entered the seminary and was ordained a Catholic
priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, serving from 1971 to
1988 as teacher, counselor, chaplain, coordinator of the Peace and
Justice Commission, Refugee Resettlement director and parish associate;
and
WHEREAS, From 1988-1994, Brian O'Shaughnessy worked as Tenant Advocate
at a Federal Housing Development in Troy, New York, where he also lived
from 1973-1993; and
WHEREAS, Brian O'Shaughnessy's third career began in 1994 when he
became the first coordinator, and then Executive Director, of the
Labor-Religion Coalition of New York State, serving until the beginning
of 2012; and
WHEREAS, For over 40 years, Brian O'Shaughnessy has led numerous
organizations including: New York DIVEST, Capital District Community
Loan Fund, Employee Ownership Project of the Albany Region, Solidarity
Housing of the Capital Region, Capital District INFACT, Hudson-Adiron-
dack Spirituality Center, Capital District Worker Center, and the Troy
Neighbor to Neighbor Program; and
WHEREAS, Brian O'Shaughnessy has also served on local boards, such as
Troy Area United Ministries, statewide boards, such as the Public Policy
Committee of the New York State Conference of Bishops, and national
boards, such as Sweatfree Communities; and
WHEREAS, Brian O'Shaughnessy has been called upon to contribute his
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Brian O'Shaughnessy has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Brian O'Shaughnessy has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Brian O'Shaughnessy upon the occasion of his designation as recip-
ient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Capital District Labor-Re-
ligion Coalition on May 16, 2012; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Brian O'Shaughnessy.
