LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Opening Word Program upon the
occasion of celebrating its 20th Anniversary on June 3, 2012

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Opening Word Program upon the occasion of celebrating its 20th Anni-
versary, to be celebrated on Sunday, June 3, 2012; and
WHEREAS, The Opening Word Program is a literacy, ESOL, and job read-
iness program, the purpose of which is to unlock the language ability of
adult participants, providing them with a key to future personal empow-
erment, increased civic and social responsibility and enhanced skills
for membership in the workforce; and
WHEREAS, For the past 20 years, the Opening Word Program has enhanced
the lives of countless women whose oral and written English skills were
quite limited; and
WHEREAS, Originally located in Wyandanch, the program has expanded
over the years and has added sites in South Huntington and Amityville,
New York; and
WHEREAS, The Opening Word Program serves over 300 women annually; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Opening Word Program upon the occasion of celebrating its
20th Anniversary on June 3, 2012; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Opening Word Program.
