LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Coach Russ Cellan and the 2010 Freeport
High School varsity football team upon the occasion of their designation
for special recognition

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding athletes and coaches who distinguish themselves through
their exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the
highest level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor
Coach Russ Cellan and the 2010 Freeport High School varsity football
team upon the occasion of their designation for special recognition; and
WHEREAS, For the second time in the last three years and 11th time in
history, Freeport High School won the Rutgers Cup as the most outstand-
ing high school football team in Nassau County; the Red Devils finished
with a record of 11-1 and defeated Floyd, 62-35, to win the Long Island
Class I championship; and
WHEREAS, This fine honor is the fifth Rutgers Cup for Coach Russ
Cellan, who completed his 25th coaching season at Freeport; and
WHEREAS, In a close, two-team race, Freeport High School received 129
votes and Lynbrook, the Long Island Class III champion, earned 120;
these were the only two schools to receive votes; and
WHEREAS, The Rutgers Award, presented annually since 1937, was deter-
mined by a vote of Nassau coaches; Freeport's victory over Floyd was the
highest-scoring game in the history of the Long Island championships,
which began in 1992; the Red Devils also broke Sayville's record of 55
points in a game, set in Sayville's Long Island Championship victory
over Wantagh in 2004; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to recognize the 2010 Freeport
High School varsity football team which has clearly made a contribution
to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of its school; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Coach Russ Cellan and the 2010 Freeport High School varsity foot-
ball team upon the occasion of their designation for special recogni-
tion; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Coach Russ Cellan and to the 2010 Freeport High School varsi-
ty football team.
