LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Arianne Papa and Jane Smyth of
Long Beach High School upon the occasion of capturing a grand prize at
the International Sustainable World (Engineering, Energy and Environ-
ment) Project Olympiad

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend and pay
tribute to those who, by achieving outstanding success in their educa-
tional and scientific endeavors, have inspired and brought pride to our
majestic Empire State; and
WHEREAS, It is also the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize
the dedication and commitment of our young people who distinguish them-
selves through excellence in science competition; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Arianne Papa and Jane Smyth of Long Beach High School upon the
occasion of capturing a grand prize at the International Sustainable
World (Engineering, Energy and Environment) Project Olympiad; and
WHEREAS, The International Sustainable World (Engineering, Energy and
Environment) Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP), was held in Houston, Texas,
May 3-6, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Organized by the Cosmos Foundation, I-SWEEEP is the largest
science fair event of its kind in the world; and
WHEREAS, Arianne Papa and Jane Smyth are seniors at Long Beach High
School in Long Beach, New York; and
WHEREAS, Competing against more than 450 top projects from 40 states
and 68 countries around the world, Long Beach High School seniors
Arianne Papa and Jane Smyth earned a gold medal in the Environmental
category and went on to capture the coveted Grand Award in that catego-
ry; and
WHEREAS, Arianne Papa and Jane Smyth's award winning research project
studied water pollution in Reynold's Channel, as well as the other Long
Island bays, and the effect that pollution has on the flounder popu-
lations in those waterways; and
WHEREAS, No strangers to the I-SWEEEP Winner's Circle, Arianne Papa
and Jane Smyth have earned gold medals in the Environmental category for
three consecutive years; in addition, the first year that they competed
at I-SWEEEP as freshmen they took home a bronze medal; and
WHEREAS, Arianne Papa and Jane Smyth developed their winning projects
in the Science Research program, under the direction of Science Research
teachers Cody Onufrock and Veronica Ade; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate to celebrate the individual accomplishments
of remarkable students in this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Arianne
Papa and Jane Smyth of Long Beach High School upon the occasion of
capturing a grand prize at the International Sustainable World (Engi-
neering, Energy and Environment) Project Olympiad; and for their note-
worthy educational and scientific endeavors and achievements; their
outstanding performance has clearly made a contribution to the spirit of
excellence which is a tradition of their school and community; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Arianne Papa and Jane Smyth of Long Beach High School upon
the occasion of capturing a grand prize at the International Sustainable
World (Engineering, Energy and Environment) Project Olympiad; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Arianne Papa and Jane Smyth of Long Beach High School.
