LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating the Longwood High School Moot
Court Team upon the occasion of winning the Annual Moot Court One-on-One
Suffolk County Tournament
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and leaders
of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best exemplify the ideals
and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late the Longwood High School Moot Court Team upon the occasion of
winning the Annual Moot Court One-on-One Suffolk County Tournament; and
WHEREAS, Moot Court is an impromptu-type of tournament where perform-
ance is based on legal knowledge and court performance on the spot; and
WHEREAS, During the seven-hour tournament, teams of three went up
against teams from all over Long Island, competing round after round,
case after case, before a panel of prominent court judges from New York
State presiding; and
WHEREAS, Moot Court teams were given a legal case in an area of civil
law dealing with negligence, personal injury law cases or contractual
law cases; they had exactly 10 minutes to read the case, discuss it,
conduct research and write up all the parts from Opening Statements to
Closing Arguments; and
WHEREAS, The attorney and witness then performed for a 30-minute legal
proceeding against the other team in front of the panel of judges; and
WHEREAS, The Longwood High School team remained undefeated for seven
rounds, including the finals to win the overall 2012 Championship; and
WHEREAS, The Longwood High School Moot Court Team consisted of three
students: Legal Researcher, Sara Smith, a senior; a witness, portrayed
by senior Ashleigh Somers; and the team's attorney, junior Joseph
DeQuarto; and
WHEREAS, The team was supported by Diane Eisen, a College Law teacher,
and Kenny Chan, a Personal Business Law teacher; and
WHEREAS, Educational competitions which serve to better prepare our
students for their future participation area of criminal justice are
worthy of praise and support; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose, these
scholars now stand honorably, with just pride in their accomplishments
and in eager anticipation of future challenges, understanding and appre-
ciating the caring counsel and support provided by their teachers,
coaches and parents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the Longwood High School Moot Court Team upon the occasion
of winning the Annual Moot Court One-on-One Suffolk County Tournament;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Longwood High School Moot Court Team, and Coaches, Kenny
Chan and Diane Eisen.
