LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Town
of Candor

WHEREAS, Each and every city, town, village and hamlet within its
borders proudly resonates with the rich and noble history of the State
of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commemorate the anniversary of the founding of municipalities throughout
the State, noting in turn their contributions to the fabric and develop-
ment of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
Bicentennial of the Town of Candor, New York, recognizing the signif-
icance of this special anniversary and applauding its distinguished
history; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Candor, located in Tioga County, is a vital
community rich in historical tradition and the spirit of pride of its
citizens; and
WHEREAS, Settled in 1794, the Town of Candor was established when, on
February 11, 1811, the New York State Senate and Assembly acted to offi-
cially separate it from the Town of Spencer, decreeing that, effective
the first Monday in March (March 4, 1811) the town was to be known "by
the name of Candor" and calling for the new town's first town meeting to
be held; and
WHEREAS, That first official Town of Candor meeting took place on
Tuesday, March 5, 1811, at the home of Abel Hart, a house which still
exists and is currently the home of Masonic Lodge 411 of the Free and
Accepted Masons; and
WHEREAS, Today, Candor has a population of around 5,139 and of that,
about 789 live in the Village of Candor, established in 1900; it is the
third largest town in Tioga County, population-wise, and the largest
land-wise; and
WHEREAS, Remaining proud of the richly diverse nationalities of its
early immigrant settlers, the Town of Candor is equally justly proud of
the ethnic and religious diversity of its current residents; and
WHEREAS, Historically, Candor has been a prosperous and creative
community; early on Candor benefited from the railroads which made it
easy for it to compete in the world market and, over the years, Candor
has enjoyed many small to medium businesses and industries that have
taken their place in history besides dairy farming, a major area indus-
try even today; and
WHEREAS, At present, there are over 100 small to mid-size businesses
with many employing anywhere from 3 to 40 local residents while others
work in nearby Ithaca or Owego; and
WHEREAS, Candor's many other varied businesses and events, such as its
four-day 4th of July Celebration, Fall Festival, A Rare Day In June, the
annual National Wild Turkey Celebrity Hunt, Canducky Derby, the Catatonk
Canoe Regatta, and the annual Breakfast with Santa in December, which
draw people to the town; and
WHEREAS, Candor is a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a fami-
ly; it is well-known to be all about the people, people helping people,
and people enjoying life; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Candor will proudly mark its 200th Anniversary
beginning with a kick-off event on Saturday, March 5, 2011, the 200th
Anniversary of its first Town Meeting, and continuing with a series of
celebrations throughout its Bicentennial Year, especially during the
months of July and October; and

WHEREAS. Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, the Town of Candor retains its commitment to enhancing the
quality of life of its citizens; and
WHEREAS, As the Town of Candor celebrates its 200th Anniversary, it
honors its illustrious past, its proud heritage and its promising
future; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the Town of Candor's rich history and
enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is
proud to pay tribute to this spirited Town upon the occasion of its
Bicentennial; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the Bicentennial of the Town of Candor and to enthusi-
astically salute its residents as they celebrate this auspicious occa-
sion; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town of Candor.
