LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. R. Mark Sullivan and Kathleen Sulli-
van upon the occasion of their designation as recipients of A Community
of Excellence Award by The College of Saint Rose on June 22, 2012

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Dr. R. Mark Sullivan and Kathleen Sullivan have given not
only of their time and energies but also of their competence, intelli-
gence and leadership and consequently have been designated for special
honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. R. Mark
Sullivan and Kathleen Sullivan upon the occasion of their designation as
recipients of A Community of Excellence Award by The College of Saint
Rose, to be celebrated at a special black-tie dinner event at the
College on Friday, June 22, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Dr. R. Mark Sullivan is the current President of The College
of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, who is stepping down after 16 years
in this role; he will remain at the College after he leaves the presi-
dency to lead the R. Mark Sullivan Institute for Leadership in Higher
Education; and
WHEREAS, His wife, Kathleen Sullivan has been an integral part of The
College of Saint Rose and is also being honored for her many contrib-
utions to the College; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Kathleen Sulli-
van is a medical technologist who specializes in clinical microbiology;
she also instructs students who are entering the field; and
WHEREAS, In spite of her interest in, and knowledge of microbiology,
Kathleen Sullivan is thought of predominantly as an ambassador for The
College of Saint Rose; and
WHEREAS, Since 1996, Kathleen Sullivan has been an active member of
the Saint Rose community and the city of Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Ever present at Golden Knights basketball, baseball and
soccer games, as well as alumni events, campus lectures, trustee dinners
and Massry Center performances, Kathleen Sullivan has spent numerous
evenings and weekends supporting the College and its students; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen Sullivan has also been known to mentor a student in
need of a parental figure away from home and she is often seen inquiring
about an employee's sick relative and delivering meals when a Saint Rose
family can use the help; and
WHEREAS, Currently ending his term as the eighth president of The
College of Saint Rose, over his 16 years, Dr. R. Mark Sullivan has seen
to it that Saint Rose professors and their students had the tools they
needed in order to shine and, ultimately, contribute to the larger
world; and
WHEREAS, From new academic facilities for every school, new residence
halls and 14 acres of top-notch intercollegiate fields carved out of a
rundown Albany park, Dr. R. Mark Sullivan has raised the bar at The
College of Saint Rose higher than most anyone imagined; and
WHEREAS, Under his luminous leadership, The College of Saint Rose
constructed a prominent home for its renowned education programs, new
classrooms and labs in the Science Center, a communications building for
a new age, a visual and musical arts center and an athletic complex fit
for national champions; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of Dr. R. Mark Sullivan's presidency, The
College of Saint Rose has seen tripled applications and doubled first-
year enrollment; the College is among the top 40 masters-level colleges

in the Northeast as ranked by U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT and has
improved its ranking by over 30 spots in three years; and
WHEREAS, A strong advocate of community service, Dr. R. Mark Sullivan
has promoted and supported numerous partnerships and alliances with
Albany and Capital Region organizations and institutions throughout his
tenure at Saint Rose; and
WHEREAS, Dr. R. Mark Sullivan and Kathleen Sullivan have been called
upon to contribute their time and talents to countless civic and chari-
table endeavors and have always given of themselves unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Dr. R. Mark Sullivan and Kathleen Sullivan have taken part in
Reach Out Saint Rose, the College's community service day, and painted
houses as part of the Habitat for Humanity project in Florida; and
WHEREAS, Their partnership was recognized formally in 2005, when both
were named lifetime honorary alumni, and in 2010 with the naming of the
new R. Mark and Kathleen Sullivan Soccer and Lacrosse Field at the
Plumeri Sports Complex; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of their community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Dr. R. Mark Sullivan and Kathleen
Sullivan have stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Dr. R. Mark Sullivan and Kathleen Sullivan are the proud
parents of three children, Anna, Kate, and Jay, as well as the beloved
grandparents of four grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which Dr. R. Mark Sullivan and Kathleen Sulli-
van have displayed throughout their lives; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. R. Mark Sullivan and Kathleen Sullivan upon the occasion of
their designation as recipients of A Community of Excellence Award by
The College of Saint Rose on June 22, 2012; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. R. Mark Sullivan and Kathleen Sullivan.
