LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Colonel Glenda A. Shearn upon the occa-
sion of her retirement after 26 years of distinguished service as a
member of the New York Army National Guard

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Colonel Glenda
A. Shearn upon the occasion of her retirement after 26 years of distin-
guished service as a member of the United States Army National Guard, to
be observed at a retirement dinner in July of 2012; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Glenda A. Shearn, a certified Physician Assistant,
joined the New York Army National Guard September 18, 1985, as a Warrant
Officer; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her entire military career, Colonel Glenda A.
Shearn has served in the New York Army National Guard Medical Command;
and
WHEREAS, Following authorization of the Army to commission Physician
Assistants, Colonel Glenda A. Shearn became an officer in 1998; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Glenda A. Shearn has been activated many times for
state military missions, including the military response to Hurricane
Floyd in 1999, service in 2001 and 2002 for the '9/11' crisis, the
Republican National Convention in 2004, and for emergency relief for
Hurricane Irene in 2011; and
WHEREAS, In 2004 and 2005, Colonel Glenda A. Shearn served on federal
active duty for the Persian Gulf War and was deployed to Afghanistan in
2008 for Operation Enduring Freedom; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Glenda A. Shearn has received federal decorations for
superior achievement and service, including two awards of the Meritori-
ous Service Medal and the Army Commendation and Achievement medals; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Colonel Glenda A. Shearn has received four awards
of the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, two awards of the
National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign
Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, two awards of the Armed
Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Service ribbon and NATO Medal, and New
York State awards including three Letters of Appreciation, two Certif-
icates of Commendation, the NY Physical Fitness Ribbon, Medal for Humane
Service to New York State, Medal of Merit, Defense of Liberty Medal and
the Operation Enduring Freedom Ribbon; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Glenda A. Shearn has ably served and led in her many
assignments including: as staff Physician Assistant throughout her
entire military career; Executive Officer and Officer-in-Charge of
Medical Command; Deputy Task Force Surgeon of the 27th Infantry Brigade
during its deployment to Afghanistan; and, at the time of her retire-
ment, Deputy Commander of Medical Command; and
WHEREAS, On April 1, 2012, Colonel Glenda A. Shearn retired after 26
years of exemplary service to her State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which individuals, such as Colonel Glenda A. Shearn have served
their country, and must recognize that no greater debt is owed than that
owed to those who have risked their lives for their beloved Nation; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited her patriotism both at home and abroad,
Colonel Glenda A. Shearn has demonstrated her love for her country and
merits forevermore, the highest respect of her State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for

their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Colonel Glenda A. Shearn upon the occasion of her retirement after
26 years of distinguished service as a member of the United States Army
National Guard; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Colonel Glenda A. Shearn.
