LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Samuel Rosenstein, distinguished World
War II Army veteran, upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition on Veterans Day November 11, 2012

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve the recognition and appreciation of the people of the
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor distinguished
World War II Army veteran Samuel Rosenstein upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition on Veterans Day, Sunday, November
11, 2012; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Rosenstein was drafted into the United States Army on
January 6, 1942; he attended and graduated from the military master
gunner school and went on to teach Officer Candidate School (OCS) as a
Sergeant in charge of the firing point before being transferred overseas
to fight the enemy; and
WHEREAS, He served in World War II with the Third Army, 87th Infantry
Division under the command of General George S. Patton; and
WHEREAS, In 1944, Samuel Rosenstein was sent overseas to fight under
the command of General Patton as part of the Third Army, 549th Battal-
ion, 87th Infantry Division; he served as a supply sergeant in the head-
quarters of an Air Craft Unit and transported military supplies from the
front lines to and from the Third Army Depots for the 87th Infantry
Division; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Rosenstein fought the enemy in England, France, Belgi-
um, Holland, Czechoslovakia, and Germany; he first landed in Hungerford,
England on October 12, 1944 and crossed the English Channel in early
December 1944 and assembled at the Red Horse Area in France; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Rosenstein valiantly fought the enemy on the Siegfried
line, opposite the Maginot Line in Northern France, and continued the
fight on the front lines into the Battle of the Bulge in Luxenberg,
Germany; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Rosenstein helped liberate Ohrdruf and Buchenwald
death camps in Germany in April 1945; he received the Good Conduct
Medal, Silver Star Medal and the World War II Medal, as well as three
battle stars for his service during the battles of Ardennes, Rhineland,
and Central Europe and was discharged on December 13, 1945; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Rosenstein was born in Manhattan in 1919 and has lived
at his current address in Flushing for 59 years with his wife Mildred;
he is Vice President of the Young Israel Queens Senior Center and helps
run the Center five days a week; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Rosenstein is a member of Jewish War Veterans Lipsy-
Blum Post 764 and was a member of the 87th Infantry Division Association
from 1946 to 2008; he attended reunions with approximately 1,000 other
members in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey and,
celebrated the last reunion, the 59th, of the 87th Division in 2008; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Samuel Rosenstein, distinguished World War II veteran, upon the
occasion of his designation for special recognition on Veterans Day,
Sunday, November 11, 2012; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Samuel Rosenstein.
