LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Sarah Connor, of Northport, upon the
occasion of her designation as a State Honoree in the 16th Annual
Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and leaders
of tomorrow, whose character and achievements exemplify the ideals and
values cherished by this great State and nation; and
WHEREAS, Sarah Connor has distinguished herself as a young woman of
superlative ability, establishing a high standard of community service,
purposefulness of life, and sense of responsibility rarely achieved in
youthful years; and
WHEREAS, Sarah Connor, age 11, of Northport, New York, and a sixth-
grader at Northport Middle School, has achieved national recognition for
exemplary volunteer service by being named a 2011 Prudential Spirit of
Community State Honoree; she was nominated for this high honor by her
school, Northport Middle School; and
WHEREAS, The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, created in 1995 by
Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of
Secondary School Principals (NASSP), are designed to emphasize the
importance our nation places on service to others, and to encourage all
young Americans to contribute to their communities; and
WHEREAS, As one of only two New York State Honorees, Sarah Connor will
receive a monetary award, an engraved silver medallion, and a trip to
Washington, D.C., April 30-May 3, 2011, for a series of national recog-
nition events; and
WHEREAS, Sarah Connor has been raising awareness of environmental
issues for several years, and is now gathering funds to achieve her
first goal, the replacement of 20 flowering cherry trees on her town's
Main Street which had been cut clown but not replaced due to lack of
funds; and
WHEREAS, When she was seven, she started hearing more and more about
the trouble the earth was in; she read a lot of books, saw movies, and
learned everything she could; at her 8th Birthday party, she and her
guests cleaned up a local park and made birdhouses out of recycled water
bottles; and
WHEREAS, Then, she says a visit to a museum exhibit on climate change
really opened her eyes and made her see that we had to start making big
changes; on her own, Sarah decided to raise money to help save the envi-
ronment using a lemonade stand she had started years earlier and
WHEREAS, In addition to selling lemonade during the summer, Sarah
sells hot chocolate in the winter, and makes presentations to business
and civic groups; she also maintains a website at
HTTP://WWW.PROJECTLEMONAID.ORG to solicit donations and educate others
about the environment; and
WHEREAS, Thus far, Sarah has raised enough funds for 15 trees and is
to be highly commended and extolled for the edification and emulation of
others, young and old, for doing what she can about something she thinks
is important; and
WHEREAS, The success of the State of New York, the strength of our
communities, and the vitality of American society depend, in great meas-
ure, upon the dedication of young people like Sarah Connor who use their
considerable talents and resources to serve others; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to honor Sarah Connor commend-
ing her for her outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leader-
ship, and community service and recognizing the value of her labors and
the promise of her future; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations with
praise and pride to commend Sarah Connor for her achievements and to
extend to her the best wishes of this Legislative Body for a future of
purposeful success and well-being, fully confident of her response to
the challenges of a promising future and appreciative of the model she
represents for all young people of the Empire State; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sarah Connor.
