LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Town
of Hamburg, New York, in 2012

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize events of
significance which exemplify the history and development of the State of
New York; and
WHEREAS, Each and every city, town, village and hamlet within its
borders proudly resonates with the rich and noble history of the State
of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is also the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
and commemorate the anniversary of the founding of municipalities
throughout the State, noting in turn their contributions to the fabric
and progression of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Hamburg, New York, in 2012;
and
WHEREAS, Located on the shores of Lake Erie, 10 minutes south of the
City of Buffalo, the Town of Hamburg, New York, has a population of over
56,000; it is a diverse manufacturing center containing, most notably,
the Ford Motor Company's stamping plant; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Hamburg, New York, is a thriving commercial
corridor and features a multitude of recreational opportunities, partic-
ularly along the town's over nine miles of shoreline on Lake Erie; the
town is also internationally famous for its Devonian fossils and shale
outcroppings along the bank of the Eighteen Mile Creek; and
WHEREAS, Boasting many architecturally unique buildings, the Town of
Hamburg, New York, holds various community events throughout the year,
including the famed Hamburg Burger Festival; and
WHEREAS, One of the largest county fairs in the United States is
located in the Town of Hamburg, New York; the Erie County Fair came to
Hamburg in 1868 and has continuously remained ever since; and
WHEREAS, The area now comprising the Town of Hamburg was first settled
in the early 1800s when John Cummings became its first landowner and
built a grist mill in 1806; at the time, the area was referred to as
"Barkersville," after its Postmaster, Zenas Barker; and
WHEREAS, On March 20, 1812, the Town of Hamburg was officially created
by an act of the New York State Legislature; during the next fifty
years, the town became a thriving agricultural community; and
WHEREAS, Many ethnic groups were instrumental in the development of
the Town of Hamburg; the earliest settlers from New England and Germany
were responsible for the growth of many prosperous farms in the communi-
ty; and
WHEREAS, By 1850, the present borders of the Town of Hamburg were
created from its original boundaries; the Village of Hamburg was incor-
porated in 1874 and the Village of Blasdell in 1898; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the rich history and enduring contribution
of the Town of Hamburg to the heritage of the State of New York, it is
the intent of this Legislative Body to join in commemorating the 200th
Anniversary of the Town of Hamburg in 2012 so that present and future
generations may come to appreciate the unique significance which its
history plays in the progression of our State and Nation's evolution;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Hamburg, New York, in
2012; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Steven J. Walters, Supervisor, Town of Hamburg, 6100 South
Park Avenue, Hamburg, New York 14075.
