LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Ninth Precinct of the New York
City Police Department upon the occasion of hosting National Night Out
Against Crime 2012 on Tuesday, August 7, 2012

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and honor
those distinguished organizations which devote their energies and
purpose in service to the community, helping to maintain public order
and protect the members of the community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to
commend the Ninth Precinct of the New York City Police Department upon
the occasion of hosting National Night Out Against Crime 2012 on Tues-
day, August 7, 2012; and
WHEREAS, The Ninth Precinct and various community organizations will
join over 34 million people in more than 10,000 communities on August 7,
2012, to promote police-community partnership, crime, drug, and violence
prevention, safety, and neighborhood unity; and
WHEREAS, National Night Out Against Crime was introduced by the
National Association of Town Watch in 1984 in an effort to heighten
awareness and strengthen participation in local anticrime efforts; to
target a larger group, a national program was proposed which would be
coordinated by local crime prevention agencies and organizations involv-
ing the whole community; and
WHEREAS, The first National Night Out Against Crime occurred on the
first Tuesday in August and has been observed on this date ever since;
and
WHEREAS, National Night Out Against Crime has proven to be an effec-
tive, inexpensive and enjoyable program established to promote neighbor-
hood spirit and police-community partnerships in the fight for a safer
nation; and
WHEREAS, National Night Out Against Crime activities have expanded
over the years and now include block parties, cookouts, parades, visits
from local police and sheriff departments, festivals, flashlight walks,
contests, exhibits, and youth programs; and
WHEREAS, National Night Out Against Crime has come to represent the
spirit, determination, and energy needed to make neighborhoods safer all
year long; and
WHEREAS, This occasion provides neighbors with the opportunity to get
to know one another, to celebrate the importance of community, and to
continue to take those steps necessary to make neighborhoods, block by
block, safer for children, the elderly and, indeed, all residents; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Ninth Precinct of the New York City Police Department upon
the occasion of hosting National Night Out Against Crime 2012 on Tues-
day, August 7, 2012; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Ninth Precinct of the New York City Police Department.
