LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Hunt-
ington Lighthouse in Huntington Harbor, New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the preser-
vation of a part of history that served to enhance the growth of this
great State, ensuring that the complete history of our State and Nation
is shared with present generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Huntington Lighthouse in Huntington
Harbor, New York; and
WHEREAS, June 16th, 2012 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Huntington
Lighthouse; and
WHEREAS, The Huntington Lighthouse is such an important historical
structure in our community; and
WHEREAS, Huntington Lighthouse is a familiar and treasured landmark
where seafarers and landlubbers alike will celebrate the occasion with
festivities that will highlight its rich history and raise awareness
about the restoration work needed to preserve its future; and
WHEREAS, For the past century, boats into Huntington Harbor have been
guided safely by the Lighthouse's beacon; this unique Beaux Arts struc-
ture is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and
WHEREAS, To celebrate its past, and preserve its future, the Hunting-
ton Lighthouse is hosting festivities including a "Lighthouse Patch
Event"; a kickoff Lighthouse Birthday Beach Party at Gold Star Beach;
the first ever Huntington Lighthouse Restaurant Week; a Pub Crawl
featuring different versions of a "Riprap Cocktail"; and the annual
Huntington Lighthouse Music Fest; and
WHEREAS, The Lighthouse Patch Event is to inform children about the
lighthouse and how it operates; the activities for the Patch will
include creating model lighthouses out of beach and recycled materials,
learning about lighthouse culture, learning about sailor music and sea
shanty music/singing, and learning about lighthouses and how they work;
and
WHEREAS, The Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society (HLPS), which
is a nonprofit organization under the leadership of President Pamela
Setchell, was recently awarded a grant by the State of New York; to
receive the full amount of the grant, HLPS successfully matched the
funds for the much needed restoration work largely from donations and
the help of volunteers; and
WHEREAS, Additional work is necessary to repair the lighthouse base
and surrounding granite boulders, known as riprap, that have been
damaged by erosion, storms, ice in the winter and heavy boat traffic;
and
WHEREAS, Today, a primary goal of the Huntington Lighthouse is to
emphasize the maritime history on the Long Island Sound so that future
generations may appreciate the significance of this bygone era; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Huntington Lighthouse in Hunt-
ington Harbor, New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society.
