LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the Bicentennial of the Town of
Lee, New York, in 2012

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize events of
significance which exemplify the history and development of the State of
New York; and
WHEREAS, Each and every city, town, village and hamlet within its
borders proudly resonates with the rich and noble history of the State
of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commemorate the anniversary of the founding of municipalities throughout
the State, noting in turn their contributions to the fabric and progres-
sion of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the Bicentennial of the Town of Lee, New York; this auspicious
occasion will be celebrated throughout the 2012 calendar year with
multiple rounds of fireworks, concerts, car shows, plays and other
commemorative events; and
WHEREAS, Formed from the Town of Western, New York, the Town of Lee,
New York, was founded in the leap year of 1812; the first town board
meeting was held on March 3, 1812; and
WHEREAS, Northwest of Rome, New York, in Oneida County, and consisting
of 45.5 square miles, the Town of Lee had a population of 6,875 at the
2000 census; and
WHEREAS, On March 3, 2012, the Town of Lee, New York, commenced its
Bicentennial celebrations with an official Opening Ceremony and a re-e-
nactment of the original 1812 town board meeting; and
WHEREAS, Bicentennial celebrations for the Town of Lee will continue
throughout the 2012 calendar year and include many planned events plus a
bicentennial calendar and "Lee-Opoly," a personalized version of the
popular Monopoly board game; and
WHEREAS, Already in place to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Town
of Lee are new road signs at Lee's borders with other municipalities,
stating, "Welcome to the Town of Lee - Est. 1812"; and
WHEREAS, The 2012 Town of Lee Bicentennial calendar is available and
features a different historic photograph for each month of the year, as
well as the planned celebratory events; and
WHEREAS, From March through October, 2012, the Town of Lee will pres-
ent a historical lecture series, featuring several slideshows; and
WHEREAS, As an integral part of the Bicentennial celebrations in the
Town of Lee, on June 21, 2012, there will be an ice cream social with
live music, and on August 19th, the town will celebrate "Old Home Days";
and
WHEREAS, The closing ceremonies for the Town of Lee's Bicentennial
celebrations will be held on October 27, 2012; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the rich history and enduring contributions
of the Town of Lee to the heritage of the State of New York, it is the
intent of this Legislative Body to join in commemorating the Bicentenni-
al of the Town of Lee, New York, so that present and future generations
may come to appreciate the unique significance which its history plays
in the progression of our State and Nation's evolution; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the Bicentennial of the Town of Lee, New York, in 2012; and
be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town Board of Lee, New York.
