LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Bell
Memorial Library

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge certain exemplary institutions that improve
the quality of life for communities within this great Empire State
through increased access to educational and recreational resources; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Bell Memorial Library in Nunda, New
York; and
WHEREAS, The Bell Memorial Library was created as a gift from Kathe-
rine Bell Lewis in memory of family members including her father, Alfred
Bell, an early Nunda industrialist and New York State Assemblyman for
Livingston County; and
WHEREAS, Katherine Bell Lewis transferred the Bell Memorial Library,
along with 300 books and other furnishings, to the Nunda Library Associ-
ation on April 6, 1912; and
WHEREAS, The library was built to hold 6,000 books; more shelves have
been added over the years to expand the collection; and
WHEREAS, A busy center of cultural and social activity for the Nunda
community, the Bell Memorial Library provides many adult and children's
programs; it serves as a vital source of free internet access for the
community; the library has over 2,300 registered borrowers and receives
over 14,000 visitors annually; and
WHEREAS, The Bell Memorial Library offers more than 15,000 items for
use by its patrons, including books, periodicals, videos, audio
recordings and electronic resources; and
WHEREAS, The library continues to look for ways to better serve the
Nunda community through its diverse collection and facility improve-
ments; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commemorate
milestones in the histories of certain exceptional public libraries in
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Bell Memorial Library; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Bell Memorial Library.
