LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Skaneateles Police Officer Eric Sharps-
teen for his heroic and life saving actions during a house fire in
Skaneateles, New York, on February 13, 2011

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
caring concern and heroic acts of those individuals who take a prompt
and appropriate action in emergency situations and in doing so, help
others to advert life-threatening danger; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Officer Eric Sharpsteen for his heroic and life saving actions during a
house fire in Skaneateles, New York; and
WHEREAS, On Sunday, February 13, 2011, Emergency 911 received a call
from a male caller reporting a house fire; Officer Eric Sharpsteen
arrived on the scene at 75 E. Genesee Street within seconds of hearing
the call shortly before 9:30 p.m.; and
WHEREAS, After learning that the homeowner Shirley Cavaiolo was still
inside, Officer Eric Sharpsteen immediately entered the burning building
to attempt to rescue her; and
WHEREAS, Despite the dense smoke that filled the home, Officer Eric
Sharpsteen was able to locate Shirley Cavaiolo who was conscious on the
stairs but unable to find her way out; and
WHEREAS, Within four minutes of arriving on the scene, Officer Eric
Sharpsteen guided the homeowner out of the building safely, both suffer-
ing only minor injuries from smoke inhalation; and
WHEREAS, Through his spontaneous and heroic actions, Officer Eric
Sharpsteen demonstrated his character and compassion for the welfare of
others; personifying, by virtue of his actions, the collective concern
of ordinary citizens across the community of the State of New York, who
are readily willing to respond when others are in need of help; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Officer Eric Sharpsteen for his heroic and life saving actions
during a house fire in Skaneateles, New York, on February 13, 2011; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Officer Eric Sharpsteen, Skaneateles, New York.
