LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Joan Beder upon the occasion of receiv-
ing the Muriel Neufeld Ethical Humanist Award from the Ethical Humanist
Society of Long Island on Sunday, January 9, 2011

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies to serve the
best interests of their communities are as asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Joan Beder has given not only of her time and energies but
also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Joan
Beder upon the occasion of receiving the Muriel Neufeld Ethical Humanist
Award on Sunday, January 9, 2011; and
WHEREAS, In addition to the awards ceremony, Joan Beder's name will be
placed on the plaque to be forever displayed on the Ethical Humanist
Society wall; and
WHEREAS, This most prestigious accolade is presented to members of the
Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island who have devoted 25 years or
more to actively serving the Ethical Humanist Society; she has served as
its President, on its Board of Trustees, and as one who was designated
to preside over Memorial Services; and
WHEREAS, Joan Beder has also served the American Ethical Union on its
Leadership Training Committee for more than 25 years; and
WHEREAS, A woman of singular distinction, Joan Beder's commitment to
making the world a better place has molded her entire life; she believes
deeply that each person has a responsibility to combat injustice wherev-
er they find it; her life is a testament to these beliefs; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Joan Beder upon the occasion of her receiving the Muriel Neufeld
Ethical Humanist Award from the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island
on January 9, 2011; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Joan Beder.
