LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE upon the
occasion of celebrating its 125th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those illustrious journalistic entities which have diligently and
consistently, year after year, recorded the history of their communities
and brought local news and news of the larger world to their readers;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE upon the occasion of celebrating its
125th Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, The STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE was created in March of 1886 by
printer John J. Crawford and businessman James C. Kennedy as the RICH-
MOND COUNTY ADVANCE; the name was changed to the DAILY ADVANCE before
its current identity; and
WHEREAS, When the STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE began, there were nine compet-
ing daily newspapers in Staten Island; the circulation of the paper
surpassed its early competitors and grew from 4,500 in 1910, to over
80,000 by the mid 1990s; and
WHEREAS, Today, as a community newspaper the STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE is
dedicated to covering the issues that affect its readers and considers
its role very seriously as a good neighbor; and
WHEREAS, The continuing success of this illustrious newspaper is a
direct result of the members of the editorial staff, who work tirelessly
to produce a paper rich in substance and exceptional in quality; and
WHEREAS, The editorial staff of the STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE include:
Brian J. Laline, Editor; William A Huus, Managing Editor; Claire Regan,
Associate Managing Editor; Mike Dominowski, Sunday Perspective Editor;
and Mark Hanley, Editorial Page Editor; and
WHEREAS, Honesty, sincerity, fairness, accuracy, and good judgment
have all played a major role in the success of the STATEN ISLAND
ADVANCE; and
WHEREAS, As the STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE moves into the future, it
carries with it the legacy of a distinguished journalistic history and
an outstanding record of growth and achievement; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE upon the occasion of celebrating
its 125th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Brian J. Laline, Editor, the STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE.
